Extension cab.

I'm thinking of making an extension cab for my Fender Twin, Do I have to use speakers of the same wattage for the extension or only the same ohms?
And if I go for a lower wattage will it place any strain on the amp?

Hmm...

Well, what about 100 watt Marshall heads with 35 watt Celestions? Is that the popular alternative to the 70 watt ones? Some people even swap out 2 of the 4 speakers so they have 2 70's and 2 35's.

Maybe I am missing somehting here....

The change in impedance is what will put any additional strain on the amp. If it has an extension speaker jack, just make sure your cab is the correct impedance. Should be listed on the jack, if it has one.
