hey guys. ok so can someone cairify some eq terms for me.....like i think i know that cut means lower db......boost means raise db....what does sweep mean??? and like for cut and boost is there a standard of hom many db's to go up or down?? thanks

I'm no expert, but yes... cut means less, and boost means more. The term "sweep" is used when you are tryig to locate a specific frequency, usually problematic ones. You would "sweep" (meaning "go through") the frequencies until youve found it. Typically this is done with a fairly narrow "Q" (small curve, think the letter V) The narrower the Q, the less frequencies are being affected. The opposite goes for wide Q. (more spread out curve, think the letter U)

As far as a standard for cutting/boosting, there are none. Just keep in mind the more you cut/boost, the less it will sound like the original.

I'm sure someone else will be able to explain Q's better, but I tried lol.

A simple way to think about working a parametric EQ is to think of a graphic eq in front of you. Now, if you hold your finger up to the sliders, the "sweep" or frequency control would move your finger left or right (low or high) to choose the center of the frequencies you want to affect. The bandwidth, or "Q" would determine how many sliders you want to move. A really narrow Q might just move one or two whereas a wide Q might make a big curve. Then , the boost/cut control would be how far you wanted to move the sliders.

In reality, a parametric is a lot more precise because you're not limited to preset frequencies like you are on a graphic, I just use the graphic visualization to help make sense of it.

As far as standards, there are none that I know of, It's always whatever the music needs with me. Although, when I find myself making huge EQ changes on the channels, I have to stop and take a serious look at how I tracked that particular track.

oo ok i see what ya mean. so when u record say drums u dont cut all the highs like nearly completly. and most of the mids.?? and same with bass? i aways thought sweeping was wen u made the low instruments low. and the high instruments high......ha o well i guess thats what these awsome forums are for!
