Elliot Smith vocal hints?

this may seem blatantly obvious to others but I was wondering if anyone knows what effects/recording techniques elliot smith uses on "Angeles" and "Between the Bars" and other assorted whiny stuff. As far as I can tell, it's two discrete vocal tracks and just him whispering really close to the mic.

I'd love to hear some suggestions on this.

You are pretty much right I think...at least as far as the doubling of his vox goes. Most of his vocals are doubled. Whether or not he is whispering I don't know...sure sounds like there is a lot of air in his vocals so maybe. He may have to double the vocals because of his whispering type style, and his thin voice......good chance of that...

In the Tape Op book there is an interview with ES where he says that those vocals are recorded as stated above doubled up in a pretty live room.

Other good example of straigt up vox doubling can be heard on Belle and Sebastian recordings.

cloning a vocal track and routing the clone thru an old spring reverb. Use a 31 band eq to fine tune the clone by pulling out the over-resonant harmonics, then combine the real and clone. This is a nice phat, warm and breathy vocal platform.
