hi guys,
my birthday is coming up, and my parents didn't know what to get me. just by chance, the same day I had been searching the net for cheap ehx pedals, just for fun. i came across stringbusters.com, which to me seems like a trade direct type place, judging by the prices. for a while now i've been trying to find a decent sound for a solo, at the moment i'm using the sansamp gt2, but i feel im wasting it by using it just for solos. i was faced with 3 options in their catalogue:
Big Muff Pi (USA) - £63
Big Muff Pi (Russian) - £58
Double Muff - £48

Now i was just wondering if anybody could tell me which is the best out of those 3, and by best i just mean the best sound. Just as a side note, if anyone could tell me what the dickens the difference between Russian and USA ehx pedals are that'd be a great help.

thanks a lot

My Russian one doesn't work anymore. I don't know why, it just doesnt. It just stopped one day. Ihad only had it for maybe 6 months.

So I bought the USA model and it has worked perfect everytime for the last 6 or 7 years.

The double muff isn't a BigMuff. It a modified BIggMuff that isn't the classic pedal. It might be good, I haven't used it, but its not the same pedal as the two previous mentions.

check the site

the electro-harmonix site has sound samples for all those pedals, you should check them out to get a better idea. IMO the double muff sounds like crap. The american big muff pi is definitely the best.

thanks a lot everyone for the advice. i wrote with the frame of mind that the USA version was better so thanks for confirming my view. Anyone else feel free to continue.

Remember:

The EHX Big Muff Pi is typically a loud pedal. Mine is wonderful, if I have my amp turned to 11 and the ear plugs in. At low volumes, it's damned near unusable.

Their are a myriad of muffs, especially as of late. As far as the russian-made ones, here is the consesnus: grey and green good, black bad. The grey and green pedals are very fat sounding fuzzes (almost like a distortion and fuzz mixed) and are some of my favorite muffs ever. The black one sounds pretty bad, really hard to dial in. The USA made is good as well, but is a slightly different take than the grey and green russian ones; it is more of a true fuzz, and has a bit more bass and treble. I personally find it a bit harder to dial in and find the treble a bit more fragile sounding than the green and grey sovteks. Vintage 70's muffs are a different breed as well, like the USA, but better in all respects.

Get a one made in USSR. The old Russian stuff is the most durable... whether its a comb or an effect pedal!
