ok this is something that has puzzeled me for a long time and i hope you all can help.

when i put up 2 mics on a guitar cab and flip the phase to see if it is in or out it is highly obvious if it is in or out. it will sound really thin and nasty if its out( checking in mono of course) like it is being run through some type of filter or something.

now. when i mic the top of my djembe and than i mic the bottom of my djembe and start flipping the phase to check it i just cannot tell. there is no change in sound to me like there is on a guitar cab. well what i mean is it is not highly obvious to me if it is in or out. i have heard that when double micing a drum like this you have to flip the bottom mic out of phase. can someone clear it all up and tell me how to her a drum that is in or out?
