happy halloween
thanks everyone for listening. this one means a lot to me. i asked a player to be named later to fill in the last section with a guitar solo. we'll see. i think that would really round this out a lot.
now i'm gonna go backwards on y'all:
David. thanks, this song means a lot to me.
jake-owa. i sure hope you don't get flamed for being honest! the sudden onset of vocals to kick off a tune is something i've become addicted to lately. but then again, i hate previews and hate long beginnings in general. like to get straight to business usually. hence, i'm pretty bad a negotiations. so you liked the drums the first time, but not after another listen? i'm having a lot of trouble with them myself actually.
macle. thanks for listening. you're like the prototype hom rec'er from what i can tell so any advice you can give i devour. i'm having a hell of a time getting the level on the snare drum right. it's really the key to the whole drum track imo. lot's of ghost notes that i really liked after i played it back, but damn if that thing isn't getting buried in the mix! when i turn it up, it spikes and i just gotta compress it again to get any volume outta everything else. maybe some eq magic will help? maybe a new drummer?
groucho. ok here's the details and they aren't pretty, it's just what i have at my disposal.
- the guitar is
a taylor 314 auditorium style (elixer ultra thin coated strings) miced with two radio shack pzm's in creative x-y position (thanks to the mic forum guys for that suggestion) sent through an old yamaha mixer for preamps then to the mona card. also put an akgc3000b about 8 inches off the 12th fret going through a joe meek vc3. a little eq on the tracks to roll off the boom around 40 hz and lower. also boosted some highs a little. slightly compressed at about 2-1 ratio at -3db from the peaks.
- the vocals are the hole in my head about 8 inches back from the c3000b going into the vc3 (fairly light compression on the vc3) then to the mona. the tracks were further compressed pretty heavily at about 3-1 ratio at like -6db from the peaks.
chris. you crack me up. and to have a sense of humor given what you just went through is outstanding. sorry to hear about the health problems. i lost the hearing in my right ear this summer for about a month and i was not a nice person to be around. oh, and i started out as a drummer, then evolved into a piano player, and now i'm trying to find my way as a singer cause that's what i like to do best. guitar is beyond my comprehension. only play it out of necessity.
twist. i'm gonna use the word incongruous tomorrow for sure! it'll find it's way into a song eventually. thanks for that! the drums are a thorn in my side here. especially the snare drum. i think if it had more whack and presence to it, it would be better, but i don't know. i'm open to any offers to replace the drums.
Erick O. see response above for micing details. it ain't pretty. stereo field was another problem i knew would come up so i'm glad you said something. i tried to widen it with nero's stereo widener cause that's all i have and it sounded like shit. sounded wide but a lot of frequencies got mangled in the process. anyone know a good plug in for stereo? thanks for listening dude.
Guernica. thanks for listening. that female voice is me

glad you like the harmonies. i just love doing that stuff.
dtb. thanks for listening. your last post kicks ass. i too check my mixes in my car as a last step.
erichenryus. what kind of self serving prick are you giving yourself 5 stars?!?!!?
