I need a new keyboard....my present one is over 10 years old and the D an octave above middle C doesn't work (really annoying). Anyways....I could go out any buy a new crappy keyboard since I am finacially-challenged...but it would be crappy and I plan on buying a midi-controller sometime soon anyways. So here's the question: Is there something I can plug a midi controller into that is somewhat portable that can produce a few basic sounds? I would only need it for practice, so the sounds don't have to be anything special I just want to be able to hear what I'm playing. I was planning on getting the M-Audio Keystation 61es for the semi-weighted keys and the cheapness, what can I get for cheap (very important) that I can use to practice with? Thanks,

Do you have a computer? One approach would be to use the Keystation 61 to control softsynths in your computer. If you already have a computer and a program like Cakewalk Home Studio or N-tracks, etc, and a decent soundcard, you could get yourself some FREE VST plug-ins and be good to go.

Otherwise, your best bet is to find a used synth module like something in the Roland JV series or maybe a Proteus from E-mu, or one from Yamaha (is that the SG series??, I don't remember) a lot depends on what kind of sounds you're looking for, but there are a lot of choices out there. Modules should be available in a wide range of prices.

Good luck!

I have a computer...and I intend to use the midi-controller with it for creating music, but I was hoping for something a little more portable for practicing. The module idea is a good one, does anyone have any suggestions for simple cheap modules? Preferably one I could just plug headphones into..that would be ideal. Thanks again!

The Yamaha QY series are walkman sized and made to be played thru headphones. And best of all, they're going for a song (so to speak) on ebay.

Other small portable modules would vary in sound quality and ease of operation but depending on your budget you should be able to find one with an acceptable price/performance balance.

Here's one:

Thanks a ton. That Yamaha looks like just the ticket.
