Does a shorter cord mean better quality?

WHen I was buying a cord to hook up my stereo to my computer, the guy at Radio Shack said that the shorter the cord the better the quality so I bought a 1 foot cord instead of a 6 foot cord. However, this make for a very akward configuration since my stereo has to be so close to the hard drive.

My question is - is there any truth to what he said?
 
You generally shouldn't buy much more cabling than you really need, but I don't think you would have noticed a difference between a one foot cable and a six foot cable.

The quality of the cable makes a difference too - but frankly, I've got cables that cost around $30-40 for a couple of 2-footers (for stereo components), and I've got Radio Shack cables... and as long as the jacks are clean, I can't hear a difference. Maybe I would if my noise floor were lower.
 
Ive found that 90% of radio shack employees no absolutely nothing about homerecording.

These guys work on commision, so suspect their advice even if the do what they're talking about. RS emps who know what they're talking about? What am I saying?
 
The length of time to get a signal across a cable:

1.5 feet = 1 nanosecond

6 feet = 4 nanoseconds

Do you REALLY think you'll notice a difference???


Ignore anyone who has to work at RadioShack. Go in, get what you want and get out again as soon as possible.
 
I personally have to say Quality is the main thing. Pro studios use VERY long cables indeed yet the quality is such that you would not notice any difference.

The UK equivalent of Radik Shack is Maplin Electronics. I bought a pair of phono to jacks from them a while ago and there is only one word that applies (excuse the French) = SH**TE

Shit would describe somthing akin to excrament. Shite would be the adjective of shit but not often used as a noun... confused... u will be...

Shite is rarely used outiside of the UK.:D

Well...the guys are right, the quality isn't really better...but...with a shorter cord, you DO have less interference, picking up of other signals, etc... Because the cords act like antennas basically, the longer they are, the more stuff they pick up on the way. Also, the longer the cord, the more resistance and heat it builds up as it goes thru it. As far as 1 foot and 6 feet are concerned...for homerecording...probably not a single difference, at least audiably.
