Well, as most of you already know, those of you who have heard me anyway, I need some help.

I was looking around an' I noticed a thread by northern_cali and his studio with the egg cartons. Aka, a closet.

Does an enclosed area with padding actually assist the vocals and the way they sound? Because to be honest all I do is stand up in my 10x10 room, push record, and start rappin' to the mic, no mic stand, shock mount, or really any accessories for it.

Do you suggest that I do the same, in a closet, with blankets, and all that? Because the way I record, is quite hard to do that. Because, I have to be at the computer to push record, and be at the computer, to push stop, or to stop and re-record if I screw up.

Also, does anyone else do their songs in one breath? In other words, rap the whole thing (minus the chorus) without stopping, or do you do it verse after verse, like record verse one, stop, record verse two, stop, etc. and then match it all up at the end? I never really thought about doing it that way, that way the delivery would be better, I always just did it all in one shot.

Please, any suggestions are welcome, the attached picture is my "studio"

Pretty much a wide open space with some 'echo'.

I can't comment on the recording process itself, as I don't rap, but as for the recording space...

Like a lot of things in this hobby of ours, its all a matter of personal taste. If you like the sound you are getting rapping in the middle of an untreated room, there's nothing wrong with that. I propped two mattresses up in one corner of the auxiliary bedroom I use for all my recording stuff, and always record vocals and other instruments facing that simply because my mics would otherwise pick up a lot of room reflection, and it sounds distant and crappy.

This room is rather small and doesn't have much furniture in it, so there is very little material to absorb those reflections, and the size causes even the smallest sound source to create shitty sounding reverb.

The closet trick is helpful for getting rid of such reflections, however, the closet in that room isnt very big so its not an option. If I weren't picking up crappy room sound, I wouldn't bother with any sort of treatment (if you can call mattresses 'treatment' :))

So, I wouldn't worry about it if you are getting something down you like.

Well, I don't get a reverb sound when I rap, it somewhat comes out clean, so I'm not sure if that's the effects of having too much crap jampacked into a 10'x10' room, or if it really just doesn't matter.

I would like a recording booth because I know it would make things sound a lot better, but it's not like I can slap matresses on my walls :D I was thinking of removing the top board in my closet, because it's one of those closets that has two swivel out doors, and it's like a rectangle inside [ ] like that, and then putting thick sleeping bags around in there, and workin' with that, but I mean if my songs are ok as is, then I just won't do it. What's your opinion of the vocals on this song?

Do I need a recording booth, or are they "aight" be ware, it is "rap" and you may not like it.

The vocals sound good to me... I wouldn't say you would need to do anything drastic to the room or convert the closet into something else... you're always encouraged to experiment to see how things come out, but I'm not hearing any weird room sound on the sample provided, as opposed to the room Im in where soloing a vocal track recorded sitting in the middle of the room exposes the crappy reflections I had mentioend before.

If you're using a dynamic and singing right into your mic, you probably don't have the gain cranked so high that outside sound is really getting in... when I use a condenser for vocals, the thing picks up birds chirping on the other side of the city... it always gives a nice sound, but ends up picking up waaay too much in some situations. So, I'd say stick with what yer doin, but always try new shit - the most unlikely setups can yield positive results :)

Okay good. Uhm, I use a Condensor microphone, and it picks up everything!.. If you listen closely to some of the lyrics, if I pulled the beat off, you'd hear my T.V. in the background :D

I think I'll just stick with what I got, no changes needed...err, I'm too lazy to change it. :P
