Do I need a pre-amp?

technically....no
sonically....probably

I personlly use either a GT Brick, or 1272 Vintech for bass guitar DI. Its a matter of taste. If you could test drive a Brick somehow, I know you will hear a difference, but you may like the firepod DI on it's on.

I use an external preamp simply because I record to an HD recorder (no pre's onboard) - so I need to power the DO box somehow. If you are getting the proper level from running bass -> DI -> onboard Fireface Pre, then you don't need to get an external preamp however, as a matter of taste, some might say an external will give a different sound, etc.

I track bass through a DI into a FireFace 800. Do I need a pre-amp, or is the FireFace sufficient?

Thanks

You need a pre-amp. Everyone needs one. The knobs and stuff are fun to play with.
