hello. this (i hope) will be my last post about this pre-amp before i buy one. i'm wanting to get the good pre-amp for a really good price. i was going to use the pre-amp on almost everything that i recorded. but i have a few thing i want to know.

1. do drums need there own pre-amps?
2. do you really need a phase switch?
3. can a phase switch help reduce noise?
4. do electric guitars need pre-amp

i really want the m-audio dmp3 or the audio buddy, but one person tell's me that there good, then the other person tells me there bad. i don't know wich one!

give me the truth or give me death!!!!!!

(just kidding about that "death" part.)

thanks,

1. Yes, With the exception of Electronic Drums
2. Very handy
3. No, Not really
4. Yes

If you have a mixer then all the mics will ahve there own gain (or pre, if you will)

Or you can have a bunch of outboard pre's also...

Sometimes it's cheaper to do the mixer thing...

Watch other posts for other opinions..

Hey - It isn't that drums need preamps, it's that mics need preamps, no matter what they're micing. Same goes for any kind of a pickup, be it an electric guitar pickup, or an acoustic guitar pickup. Preamps can be seperate units, or you can use the preamps in a mixer, as stated above. But th ebottom line is, mics and pickups need some sort of a preamp to get them up to line level.

i want something to give me a warm sound to.

Do you also want it to scratch your back and give you a free hand job? :D

The dmp3 will do just fine. If you want warm, then you might look at some Joemeek compression, unless you think you could swing some tube pres in the $1,000 and up range.

how many channels of preamp do you need?

what sources will you be mic'ing and with what mics?

how much you wanna spend?

Here is a possible exception. Every time I use Earthworks QTC1's on a drum kit, It's all I can do to dump enough gain. The mics by themselves are sometimes to hot. The next time a drummer comes in, the set up I'm going to try is; QTC's into an AT remote phantom supply, into a pair of xlr-inline adjustable pads, directly into the D/A converter.
If this works out as planned, it should make for a very clean 'pre' path.

It's true, QTC's are so hot you may not need a preamp at all, assuming phantom power, especially on loud sources. I routinely use an inline pad at the end of the mic cable before it ever gets to the preamp. And sometimes that's still not enough, and i have to use a preamp with a built-in pad as well. I've never tried bypassing the preamp altogether, but that's because i need a preamp as a source for phantom power.

This is working out real fine. I'm having consistently good results with thes mics. I'd love to try some of the directional ones when I can manage to afford it.
