Just like, I suppose, all mics are different, so too for all voices. That being said, I am certain that trial and error is probably the only reliable method for selection. Nevertheless, some basic guidlines may be possible out of the collective experience of the members on this site.

The basic idea would be to break voices down into thier traditional catagories such as soprano, alto, tenor and bass and then male and female. Then stylistic characteristics might be usefuls such as rock, pop, soul, r&b, rap etc.

Ultimately, subtleties such as range and sound level might alos help.

It seems to me that without this information, discussions on which mic is "best" are completely academic.

My friend you are absolutly correct! Although there are some mics that are better all around than others, as far as picking the best it is always good to do trial and error. I can gurantee that an AT 4050 will sound better on some vocalists than an 87.

Although for many people on this board, and the thousands of others in this situation it is tough to have a mic cabinet that allows you to use this method.

I also want to say that breaking down to voice part is not always a safe bet, it also depends on whether this person has had training, how they form there words, and any other techniques they may use. Just keep spending the dough and build up a massive collection, and don't sell ANYTHING (okay maybe a few things)... you never know when it may come in handy.

Dividing voices into basic catagories can help someone understand microphone selection better.
Unfortunately, because there are SO many variations of each voice type, it's best to simply audition them individually.
Kind of like picking out shoes for my wife. :)

I find it also varies according to the pres used, the mics and pres used on any other tracks, and what key you're in.-Richie
