I’m moving/merging from Analog to Digital recording for vocals and acoustic guitar.

A friend keeps telling me to go with the Digitech GNX4.... for everything.

He says even though it is marketed for “guitar”, the unit it has EVERYTHING I’ll ever need.... even for vocals. He loves his and raves about it.

Anybody have experience with it as a “do everything” recorder?

Yeah I own it. It does everything. I dont' have the monitoring to really find out the quality but its atleast amazing for getting ideas down. You can plug a mic right in, it has phantom power. Exactly why I bought it too and I approve. Any questions in specific?

Oh yeah and once I record guitar and vocals (you can do two tracks at a time) I can also put on headphones and track my electronic drums. Then I still have room for 5 more tracks I think.

This is very cool. I have two questions:

1. Can you record directly from an analog source... like a reel-to-reel tape recorder?
2. Can you monitor directly to speakers? (thru an amp/but not thru a PC).

Hmmm... I found the GNX4 owner's manual online:

Answer to Question #1:
- Looks like it could be used as a dry Analog/Digital converter; 24-bit USB to PC... or... 16-bit/Internal CF Card
- It has two 1/4" line inputs; balanced or unbalanced.
- I don't see why it wouldn't take a Stereo Analog line input from a Tape Deck.
- CAN ANYONE VERIFY THIS FOR ME?

Answer to Question #2:
- Yes. Definately can feed speakers/monitors.

I have a Zoom G7 guitar processor with 16/48 USB interface.
G7 has a 1/8" stereo Line In (1/4" or RCA would have been better), and no Mic Input or multi-track recorder capabilities (hence record to PC via USB) or built-in drum machine.

I love my Zoom G7 for recording and it is very intuitive for monitoring while recording. I had too much turning this on, that off when using a PCI soundcard. Zoom gets it right.
