I've been looking at a few used digital recorders and am wondering what opinions anyone has on them. They are as follows:
BOSS BR-864
BOSS BR-1180
Fostex VF80
Korg PXR4

I play the guitar and am looking for something to throw ideas down on and possibly create some full-blown songs. Thanks.

Out of those 4 I would recommend the Boss BR-1180 or possibly the PXR4, but I've never used any Fostex stuff, so I have no opinion on that. I own a Korg D1200mkII digital recorder -- which is fabulous, but the problem with the PXR4 is that it's so limited track-wise (although it is tiny). The main problem with digital recorders under $1000 is that most of them have only 2 track simultaneous recording. This may not be an issue for you, but a 10-track recorder sounds a lot worse when you realize that you get those ten tracks by overdubbing FIVE times. Look at the Tascam 788, also.

Thanks. That's just the kind of information I'm looking for. I will look into the Tascam and the Korg.

I just wanted to say how awesome this site is! I've been searching it for a few days now for information on various digital workstations and have found a wealth of knowledge available without a bunch of crap mixed in. I started out looking at small 4 & 8 track recorders, and now find myself wanting 12 or 16 tracks! I think I have it narrowed down to the fostex vf160 , yamaha AW16G or the Korg D1200. I'm still doing research on what to get, but just wanted to say thanks. I'm sure once I buy something I'll be spending a pantload of time here figuring out how to use it.

don't forget, there seem to be a LOT of people who are quite partial to the akai dps16.

brother, i too am stuck with your dilemma. i am down to the aw16g, the dps16, and perhaps the vf160....... i think

You might want to check out the user forums for each of these machines. I have an AW16G and the folks at the forums at www.aw16g.com have been most helpful with my learning curve.

good luck!

For the price (or less) of a new 8-12 track unit, you could buy something used on ebay with 16 tracks and possibly more options. I personally don't like buying things new if I can - it's like buying a new car ... it loses about a HUGE % of it's value as soon as you drive it off the lot. Warranties are great, but they only last a year usually. Something to consider ...

After much thought and research, I bought a Tascam 788 off eBay. I figured it was halfway between a 4 track and a 16 track! I was really thinking hard about getting a 16 track, but I never done any recording so I figured I'd cut my teeth on the Tascam. Hopefully when if/when I'm ready to move up to a 16 track I'll have a lot more hands on knowledge. Any advice or gotchas I'd should know about the Tascam 788? I didn't get the CDR but will probally buy it in the future. Thanks for everyone's help.
