I have an inspiron 1525 dell laptop, I'm pretty sure its just a bad integrated sound card. But I was wondering what I would need to do to be able to make decent home recording, at least comparable to what you can do with a decent mic and a macbook.
Can I upgrade my sound card? I've heard about USB soundcards but will they be of any help?
Do i need to buy a condenser mic? How does that plug into the computer?

Thank you.

you'll need some sort of interface (could be firewire or usb) that you'll plug your mic into. and then software to record to via your interface. then you can use a mic of your choice with that interface. if you get a condencer mic, make sure your interface has phantom power.

that should at least get you started. search the terms that you're not familiar with.

So if I use the best USB microphone , such as MXL.009 USB, or I use Shure x2u + decent microphone, do they make any significant difference on home recording (vocal)?

Please stay away from USB mics... they are, for the most part, made for PODCASTING and not music production.

Quick paste from my standard replies:

Still using a built-in soundcard?? Unfortunately, those are made with less than $1 worth of chips for beeps, boops and light gaming (not to mention cheapness for the manufacturer) and NOT quality music production.

#1 Rule of Recording: You MUST replace the built-in soundcard.

Here's a good guide and tested suggestions that WORK: http://www.tweakheadz.com/soundcards_for_the_home_studio.htm

(you'll want to bookmark and read through all of Tweak's Guide while you're there...)
