Hey Guys - Here is me playing "Dancing Nancies"

I recorded this today right after I got home from working out, so I am like sucking wind about half way through!!! LOL

I played this live. It is a one taker :-)

TO NOTE:

If you are listening with Winamp, then please put some EQ on it, because it is completely dry. I just plugged my guitar in and sang it; then encoded to mp3. Here is the preset I use:

presets-load-preset-full bass & treble

PLEASE TURN ON THE EQ IN WINAMP AND LOAD THIS PRESET BEFORE LISTENING!!!

CLICK THE DOWN ARROW ON THE RIGHT TO DL!!!

I'll listen, but...

...I don't change my Winamp presets for anybody. Lol.

Okay, the guitar sounds like it was recorded direct. Therefore, I hate it. Sounds like you played it pretty well though. Hrm...lemme hit this "rock" preset on my Winamp player.

HOLY SHIT!!! SONIC BRILLIANCE!!!!!!!!

hahahahahaha... must be da' money!!!

Interesting interpretation. Are you singing any actual words? I mean, I like the vowel thing you've got going on, and I bet you can do a wicked mean Smashing Pumpkins cover when you're not doing the falsetto thing. Dave's hard to cover.

Anyway...I had fun. You're right about that preset thing....roflmao.

I recorded this today right after I got home from working out, so I am like sucking wind about half way through!!! LOL

Oh My,,,,,,,,

I've heard "I'm sick", "I was sick", "I'm hung over", "I'm drunk", "I'm gonna be sick cause I'm drunk and hung over", "I smoke too much", I don't smoke enough :D", "I can sing cause I'm smoking just enough of too much".........but I've never heard the above!!!!! :) :) :D :p

The git sounds just like it should..........direct in and robbed of any pleasant wood sounds.

Vocals are stratigically low;).

I'm not sure where you want the song to go but, it sounds like you had fun recording it and you can play a cover so...........I say good job!!

Thanks for the listen

Peace,
Theron

"Okay, the guitar sounds like it was recorded direct."

Yea, it is directly recorded, and with a really cheap guitar, and even shittier soundcard.

"Interesting interpretation. Are you singing any actual words? I mean, I like the vowel thing you've got going on."

LOL Yea, I am not sure. Sometimes I just lose myself in a song and start kind of chanting.

"...and I bet you can do a wicked mean Smashing Pumpkins cover when you're not doing the falsetto thing."

Yea, I can cover a Pumpkins tune pretty well. Actually, the way I sing on this song for the most part i.e the falsetto thing, is really new to me. Up until about 3 weeks ago I have always had a more grittier sound. I sung alot of rock tunes.

But about 3 weeks ago I decided to learn some DMB, and well that is just how it came out. First time I have ever tried to sing something softer sounding like this.

"Dave's hard to cover."

Yea, tell me about it!!! I haven't really heard many people try.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and I am glad you enjoyed it.

LOL, yea I know. They all sound like lines of B.S. and that's why I was hesitant to even write that, but the fact is just that. Listen to the breakdown/bridge part where I am singing, "Pick it up , pick it up, pick it up." I am truly out of breath. As you can hear me straining and cut out at least once. I picked the guitar up about 5 mintues after getting home from doing about 2 hours at the gym. My whole body was just fatigued.

"The git sounds just like it should..........direct in and robbed of any pleasant wood sounds."

Man, I just don't get all you techheads out there, who say stuff like this. Let me ask you a simple ?

When you play live and you plug your guitar directly into a mixer, as I have done here, then out to monitors, which I have also done here, how does that sound any different then what I am doing. I mean I can play through my mixer which is feed into my soundcard and out to my monitors, and it sounds like if I were to play a show, all I do after that is hit record while I am playing, and on playback it sounds exactly like when I was playing live.
Please explain....

"Vocals are stratigically low."

Not really. Like I said this is a live recording, and so the mix is going to fluctuate. I just simply panned my vocs left and my guitar right then did a really simple mix. I even thought the vocs were too loud in some parts.

"I'm not sure where you want the song to go but, it sounds like you had fun recording it and you can play a cover so...........I say good job!!"

The reason for me recording this is because, some one on a dmb board requested dmb covers and so I recorded and sent that one in. I write originals as well.

The reason I posted it here is well, those folks on the dmb board weren't too friendly of my singing. And so I wanted to come to a board which is populated with more experienced musicians, whom I feel will give me a fairer critique.

Anyways, thanks so much for listening and taking the time to write.

Hello again. Listen, I wasn't trying to piss you off or anything, and I'm just about as opposite of a "techhead" as any person can be, so I'll throw my 2 cents back in. Yeah, you're right about the guitar tone being plugged straight in. If you grab a live version of Dave Matthews doing this song, his guit's gonna' be run direct too...AND IT'LL SOUND LIKE ASS!!!

I play an acoustic live too. And I plug it into my Roland Jazz Chorus Amp, and run it through an effects processor, and a seperate EQ unit, and a Compressor, then to a snake...and ultimately, DI'd to the board. AND IT SOUNDS LIKE ASS!!! We all get away with it live, because we have to...but whenever I'm doing a tune live without the band, I sit my ass down and mic the guitar, because it sounds like an acoustic guitar. I've heard other people here (GUERNICA) get amazingly beautiful acoustic tones by recording the guitar direct and by mic simultaneously; maybe somebody who knows how to do that can help you get a better tone IF (and this is the important part) IF you want it. If you like the sound of a guit run straight into the board, more power to you. Notice, I said "I" hated it. I didn't say it was wrong... Lol. I mean, I'm a guy who actually LIKES the sound of a distorted acoustic guitar... I use it a lot live, and I love it, and it sounds like ASS to 99% of the people who hear it.

As far as the opinions you may have received on another BBS, I hope that doesn't bug you too much. The coolest cover songs are ALWAYS the ones that take a song in a completely different direction. Joe Cocker covered the Beatles and kicked ass by doing the tune in a TOTALLY unrecognizable fashion. Somebody here posted a cover of "99 Red Balloons" recently, and it kicked ass too. Some other Jackass around here did a cover of Seal's "Crazy," and it may have been the coolest cover I've ever heard in my life. TOTALLY different from the original. I don't think you can expect to change a tune up and get love from a board dedicated to the artist who did the tune originally unless you do it EXACTLY like the original... But why would anybody want to do that??? To me, covers are cool if you can put your own stamp on them. Otherwise, they're good practice for honing your recording techniques.

Anyway, I thought you did a very interesting interpretation, and I thought the guitar sounded like ass.

Much Love,
-The Pontificator

And One More Thing...

I wasn't kidding about the distorted acoustic. I literally run it through a TubeScreamer. The only people that don't leave are the ones that slow down to look at car wrecks. It's wonderful. Screw normal.

Hey - I think maybe we have got some of the post here crossed. Those things you mentioned above were in reponse to another post similar to yours.

Anyway, no offense taken here. I know what you are saying. And how it is your opinion and all. Ironic thing here is that I am a ASSMAN, probably why I like my guitar sounding like ass. :-)

Also, all good points about Joe Cocker, and covers in general. Why even cover the damn song if you are not going to change something about it and contruct a exit ramp to take the listener to a new place.

Last, I know any criticism on my music is a shear reflection of jealousy and envy on the part of the listener. No one kicks a dead dog, and everyone wants a piece of the king!!!

Aww geez,

First and formost, I tried to say it how it is without being an ass. I'm not an ass and would love for you to know that and feel good about posting here.

The git sound was well addressed by Chris.....i.e. a "live with studio control sound vs a live set up " and I like the mix of the PA or amp along with a mic at the sound hole to give the live sound a chance at warmth and acoustic personality.........

As far as the "stratigically low vocals".......I was thinkin' that since you were admittedly out of breath, you kept the vox low so as to not bring attention to your breaths ( I didn't really hear it, so it worked!!). I liked your singing and was kinda suggesting that you might wanna boost the level of the vox.

In regards to your reason for cutting the song.........when someone says they came home tired and out of breath, then five minutes later recorded a song, I get the impression that it is light hearted fun of recording as the impetus(sp?). No disrepect intented at all. I didn't listen cause I had to, I did so cause I wanted to and your song was worth taking the time to check out.

If I've angered you or given a callous first impression to your music, please know that wasn't my intention.

Hope that clears things up:)

Peace,

Theron

Okay, now that was just funny. Well done. Confidence is important, lol.

...and I can vouch for Theron...he's A-OK, and...I'll have you know, he posted the funniest thing ever on this BBS. Notice how he signed his post as follows:

"Peace,

Theron"

He does that almost always, and somebody once suggested that he should change his name to "Peace, Theron." His very next salutation was:

"Fuck you all,

Theron"

Anyway...post more stuff, b/c I find jealousy to be a really great motivator. :D :D :D

Hey Winston,
The folks here take alot of pride in the stuff thats put up. Huge amounts of time and effort go into the songs that are posted........ Dont be offended by an honest critiqe here..... the truth is you hurried through this. It sounds like you know this yourself. The pitch on the vocs is bad, and the tones aint all that great either. It sounds like you know this..... so re-record it right . Youve been given a great place to start by two talented regulars in here. Have fun, We're looking forward to hearing what you can do:)

Hey - I am not sure why all you guys think I am offended for; was it the Techhead reference. Honestly, it just baffles me sometimes by the critiques ppl give on the sound quality of a recording. I think sometimes the slam is a bit histrionic. A simple ploy to get some attention.

First, you don't even know what kind of equipment I used. So look at it this way. To me, it could also come off like a bunch of fucking pretense! Like, "Hey, look at me with my top of the line fucking everything. Your recording sounds like ass. I am so much higher on the food chain than you." (insert bellowing laugh)

See, this is recorded with a guitar that cost $250, a mixer that cost less than $100, and probably the world's most amiss factory soundcard. I honestly don't even know how it records as good as it does; cause on playback there is always this horrible muffled, chopping sound. (Please if anyone knows what the fuck is causing this please clue me in) So I am sure that has a lot to do with the quality of the recording. Though the point about direct plug, regardless of equipment, is well taken.

And yes, it was a very impulsive thing. My life as a troubadour is fueled only by impetus. (theron, impetus is sp correct but you used it in the wrong form. It is a noun. Impetuous, my friend, is what you were hunting for in that empty, barren wasteland...of doobie carcass and reefer cacti...that you call your mind. :-)

Also, I guess something I have learned in my short time here, is that sometimes it is not too easy, especially if you do not know the person; to pick up on his tone and intentions.

Hey - OOPS. I guess I spoke too soon. Okay, now I'm offended. No wait, and idea has arisen:

Me = Led Zeppelin

Guernica = Rolling Stone Magazine

Listen, drama queen, I misspoke earlier. When I said your guitar sounded like ass, I meant to say, "You're an ass." Please go make yourself a flame target elsewhere until you have something less laughable to offer, or something intelligent to add.

Fuck you very much,

Hey - Thanks Chris for helping me prove my point. I was right. You like to be provocative in order to get attention. You must really dig Eminem!!!

Man, go get you a piece of pie, and chill tha fuck out.

WINSTON

People here have just been trying to be polite. This is not an insult post. I heard your tune... and frankly haven't responded because I didn't find anything positive to say about the performance, regardless of the recording quality. I don't like Dave Matthews, either.

FYI this is a forum where honest opinion prevails. If you want your ego padded, try ampcast.com. Notice I won't respond in kind if any insult is hurled this direction, so no worries :)

Just a parting thought...

If you're not looking for comments about your performance, or sound quality... what comments would you like from us?

If you weren't worried about sound quality, why worry about us using Winamp's eq? Tried the bass & treble thing... made it sound worse, actually! :D

You'll have to forgive us... we at HR.com get so much quality stuff posted here from members every week that it's hard to take a post like yours seriously... what USUALLY happens is that people will take the recording advice given here, re-record, and come back. It's THAT action that makes us better at recording, and at our performances too--not just how expensive our signal paths are.

This is an mp3 clinic--or a place of learning... that's why the feedback. Last I visited ampcast.com, they were all very busy patting each other on the back. Maybe all you need is somebody to like your stuff? Try out that site, anyway.

Hey, you're welcome; and Yeah, you're right. I do have quite the reputation around here for singling people out and trashing them and their tunes so as to "stir things up." I do it all the time. It's like recreation for me.

And if I'm honest, I'm sure it all stems from jealousy and insecurity. Yours is the greatest tune I've ever heard here. I can't believe you haven't been picked up by a major yet. And inexplicably, you've received some negative treatment at the 2 BBS's where you've posted this masterpiece. What in the world is wrong with all of the people on the planet who aren't you??? Weird, eh?

In closing, if I might humbly offer a bit of actual constructive criticism, please learn how to use an adverb correctLY before you start padding your superiority complex by mocking somebody's typos.

In the meantime, I'll try to clean up my act.

My humble apologies for not worshipping you sooner.

DAMN FUCKING RIGHT!!!

What in the world is wrong with all of the people on the planet who aren't you???

YOU WANNA KNOW? WELL, I ALREADY SAID IT IN A PREVIOUS POST. THAT IS FACT.

"In closing, if I might humbly offer a bit of actual constructive criticism, please learn how to use an adverb correct before you start padding your superiority complex by mocking somebody's typos."

HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!!! LOL GODDAMN YOU'RE A DIPSHIT. FUCKING, "SPELLED CORRECT" IS FUCKING PROPER ENGLISH. YOU CAN USE EITHER ONE. BUT ONLY AFTER THE VERB. OTHERWISE IT WOULD READ, "CORRECTLY SPELLED" AND "CORRECT SPELLED" WOULD BE WRONG!!!

My humble apologies for not worshipping you sooner.

TOO LATE!!!

SAD PART OF ALL THIS, CHRIS, IS THAT I LIKED YOU THE MOST BEFORE YOU FUCKING LOST YOUR MIND ON THE LAST POST. ALL THIS TIME EVERYONE KEPT SAYING THESE ARE NICE GUYS, YOU'RE TAKING IT THE WRONG WAY. WHERE DO YOU GET THAT FROM? YOU PEOPLE ARE THE ONES TAKING SHIT THE WRONG WAY. I HAVE NOT ONCE BEEN INDIGNANT; UNTIL YOUR LAST POST.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO GO BACK THROUGH THEM AND SEE WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE.

ANYWAY, END OF THE BATTLE OF WORDS. WHEN I DROP MY ORIGINAL ON BBS NEXT WEEK, EVERYTHING WILL BE PUT TO REST. AND AFTER THE POST OF THE ORIGINAL, I WILL BE LEAVING THIS BOARD; SO NO NEED TO WORRY ABOUT ME.

I'LL BE HEADED WEST TO BECOME A ROCKSTAR!!!!

P.S. EVERYONE KEPT SAYING I WAS BEING NASTY. (BUT IN DIFFERENT WORDS) WELL HERE IS YOUR FUCKING WRATH, THAT YOU WANTED SO FUCKING MUCH.

Okay now THAT'S more like it. That was an excellent read. Seriously, you have a gift with the written word. You're still wrong about the adverb, but so what.

Now I'm giving this thread 5 stars, because now it deserves it.

I look forward to your post, man. No sarcasm here at all. Nothing would make me happier than to see you turn this around. I mean, this is pretty ironic, actually...because up until 2 days ago, my avatar read "FLAME WARS SUCK." (see, there was just a touch of sarcasm in my last post as well).

If your music is as intelligent as your sattire, I'm gonna' like it. And the grammar can suck, I won't take off points.

You'll get an honest listen from me, and an honest response. I hope you astound me.
