Cymbal Overheads

I was thinking about buying 3 SM57's for Cymbal Overheads and Hats.

Would that be a good idea or not? I've heard pretty good things about Shure.
 
Do consider the MSH-1A SDC built by our own mshilarious. Check out the clips, there's a drum overhead one.

sm57's are a poor performer on drum OH's.... I use 57's alot, and I feel they are poor performers in any recording siuation :-) its a great live mic tho....

i don;t have a great OH mic on my kit... I use a Peavey Diamond vocal mic... (yeah, I know) i have heard lots of good things about Rode, but not sure of the model I was refered :-/ I have used some inexpensive large diaphram mics as OH and I was pleased with the outcome also...
 
Oktava Mc-012 (MK-012).

I know there's a newer CO. making them and I'm not up to speed w/ which is better... but my older pair from around 1999-2000 are great for OH. I'd try and find a used Pair.

I just went down to the studio and looked at my mic,.. its the Oktava 319... age unknown :-) bought used...

What's your kick back? You're taking 10 cents off the top of ever mic sold, aren't you?:P

Seriously, the MSHs are certainly worth looking at. So are a lot of other mics. I personally prefer a LDC as OHs. Here is a quick shoot out I did. I was mostly comparing stereo mic techniques, but there is a clip of a couple of Audix i5s (mics very very very similar to the SM57) that you can compare to the clips of the condensors. Link Sort of an apples and oranges comparison, but hopefully you'll get the idea when you hear the transients (or lack of).
 
You should never need more than a pair for overheads, they should almost always be condensers, and definately NOT 57's.

MXL 603's or Oktava MC-012's.

Thanks man.

I always read up and seen the 57 were used for everything. So I was thinking maybe pulling them off as OH's. I knew about the condenser though. That's a given.

I won't lie I'm on a major budget,being in school,and car insurance,and etc. lol. So I'm just looking for a nice pair of OH for my kit.

You can get a pair of the MSH-1as for around $50. I have a pair of the MSH-1s and they are great for the money. I have other small diaphram mics but no Omnis Which is what the MSH1A's are.

If your room sucks you wont want an omni though.

I've already added 3 MSH-1 to my wishlist :D
 
If you want some good studio standards for overheads. Shure sm81's work like a dream, bit expensive tho.

Lots of good choices - in the under 300 dollar range don't overlook the studio projects B1. I've had great results with them for about the same price as the the 57 you mention.

Not real thrilled with the 81s. The spacing and overhead image seemed a little off. I liked the 012s a lot better, and theyre cheaper. Idealy Id have a pair of M300s(if somebody didnt out bid me by $80).
 
i just picked up a pair of the MSH-1A SDC's.. havent used them yet, but cant wait...
i have a pair of joe meek jm27's that sound ok, not great
i've heard tracks with a pair of MXL 993's that sounded execellent..

those three sets are all pretty cheap... if you got some more cash go for:
Oktava Mk-012 (k not c, i think the c=chinese crap) or
Peluso CEMC-6

just my opinion..

Well, if he's looking at 81s I'd be looking at Josephson C42s instead.

Nope. I have an MC-012. It is definintely the Russian version. The box is the Russian case, it came with the 10 dB pad, and the connections are silver plated or whatever.

Determining the manufacturer requires checking all of those things above. The quick and dirty answer is that if it has a 10 dB pad, it is probably the Russian version. Either that or it is someone who bought the 10 dB pad and is intentionally trying to defraud someone into thinking it's the Russian version. :D

[Correction: mine does say MK-012. That said, I'm pretty sure there are some that were labeled MC-012 that are legitimate Russian versions of the mic. The transliteration of the Russian character could probably be either a C or K. This labeling difference could be the difference between those imported into the U.S. by the official importer versus those sold outside the U.S.]
 
im just pretty sure the name changed when the cheap chinese version came out... although they still sell the russian ones under the mk-012 name

if you can't get a 57 to work in the studio, you must be doing something wrong
