Hi. I have recorded some strings into cubase and I want to play along with them live on a piano and film it. I have my cubase and the synth I will be playing piano on going through a mixer and then out to the mic input of a video camera. My problem is that it is quite hard to keep time with the strings unless I have the metronome in cubase turned on, and if I have it turned on it gets recorded on the camera. Is there a way around this? I was thinking about getting an external metronome, but wasn't sure if it would keep perfect time with cubase? Thanks for any help.

Use headphones.

Or, record the piano with the metronome first, then film yourself playing along to the already recorded track.

Or, film yourself playing piano with metronome, then replace the video audio track with the recorded piano and strings.

How about use a small earbud earphone just in one ear. Maybe put it on the least visible side.

Thanks for the replies. I am already using headphones as I haven't got the mixer connected to an amp. Not sure how this would stop the metronome from cubase being recorded on the video camera though as the output from cubase is going from the mixer and is connected directly into the video cameras mic input.
I had thought about dubbing sound on later, but wanted to stick to playing as much as I could live.

Aaah... I see what you mean...

That's a bit awkward unless you have a computer with more than stereo outs, in which case you could send a click one out to an amp that powers headphones.

Another way would be if you could use a sound module, like a Roland SoundCanvas or a drum machine and have than run off of track on Cubase and you take your click off of that.

Another not so great way would be to put a click on one side that goes to your ear and the other side goes to the camera in mono only.

Those ways would make it so that the click is not recorded on the camera.

Do you have a MIDI keyboard or any thing? you could send the metronome out as a MIDI signal and plug it into a keyboard with headphones so the MIDI keyboard is generating the clicks and the audio channel is click-free

Or you could get an external metronome and tap the exact tempo in, then start the metronome and hit cubase playing to start on the right beat - if you need more warning before you have to start playing the piano, you could chop out a section of the music on cubase and copy it a good few bars before anything starts, thus you start the metronome, start cubase in time, cubase will get to the end of that seciton you copied and go silent for a bit (but stay in time) and you have a metronome going in time

...oh and if you get a digital metronome and put the tempo in exactly there's no reason why it wont stay in time, this is the 21st century.

Or you could download a metronome program for your PC that flashes a light or something

Thanks people! Those last 2 posts from Dinty and Yorkshire have just sorted my problem out. I do have a Roland desk top synth, the Roland SH 32, so as you both suggested I can add a beat in cubase and have it trigger a hi hat or something in the Roland which will output through the headphones only. Thanks alot for the help!

ummmm...just thought, I'm already using the headphones to listen to cubase and the piano. I'll have to connect the Roland to my stereo amp to listen to the tick

hehehe, its just not your day is it?

Do you have any in-ear plugs? you could plug them into your stereo for the click and put them in your ears underneath the headphones

lol. No, haven't got any in ear type headphoes. Seems to be working now though, I can hear the tick from my stereo over the sounds coming out of my headphones
