Hey guys, I'm new to home studio recording and want to get into house, trance, jungle and basicly underground type music, just need to know which way to go about it, I just recently bought a korg m1 workstation, i've messed around wif it and i dont think its what i want, would I be better with a sampler keyboard like maybe a roland w-30 or eg-101 any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey shagz78...your question is sort of unclear...are you asking about how to chose and set up your recording equipment or are you mostly asking about keyboards...

I have always heard good things about the Korg M1, it was one of the first sample-based keyboards, sort of set the standard for the modern keyboard, but it came out in the late 80's, so the sounds may be dated somewhat.

You seem unsure about how you feel about the M1. I'm not real familiar with the type of music you want to make, but maybe you should try to create some songs using the M1 and see how you feel about it. At the same time you can explore other keyboards/tone modules/samplers/soft synths. The M1 may fit into your style or you may conclude you want something else.

Once you get the sound you want and you get into creating songs then you can better focus on the recording aspect, and you can see more clearly what questions to ask as to what you need to accomplish your goals. There are people on this board that can help you with recording equipement, whether you chose a 4-track cassette, a stand-alone digital, or record with a computer. Hope this helps.

What is it about the M1 you don't like? Sounds? Programmability? Keyboard? Ease of use? Be more specific. No one can give you any meaningful suggestions without more information.

How much money do you want to spend? What other equipment do you have? How do you record?

The more you tell us, the better answers you'll get.

thanks guys, sorry i waznt more precise, it is mainly the sounds and espescially the drum sets, all i currently own is the m1, which as it turns out i may not have for much longer as it decided it didnt want to play the game anymore an now doesnt play anything at all, I also have an sp-202 and a pc which i havnt decided if i want to use yet, just basicly wanted to know what my options are and what kind of equipment such as keyboards, recorders, etc to get my studio goin, i dont really have much of a clue at the moment and just wanted sum sought of advice, the music i want to make is mainly underground house, trance and dance type music, thanks

The M1 may have a few sounds that may be of use to you in those genres (the M1 piano is a staple for classic house music, as I understand), but it's not going to really do the job, especially for really synthy ananlog sounds. There's a lot of great software out there that can help; you might check it out before sinking more money into outboard synths. Check out jeskola Buzz, fruity loops, psycle, Aero studio, or some others. Lots of great tools out there for little or no money that you can make some killer trance/dance/house with.
