hey.. i have 200.. need a compressor... wat hsould i look into ?? used for recording rock bands.... more channels better... links would be nice... and do the mics run to the compressor or mixer first... before goin to comp... thx

Mics need mic pres - ALWAYS - so mics run to a mic pre, then typically to your recorder - or to other devices (compressor, etc...), and then your recorder.

Personally, I almost never record with compression or other devices in the recording chain, preferring to use outboard at the mixing stage.

FMR Audio's RNC (reallly nice compressor) runs about $175 and is a top-notch piece of gear, especially considering its modest price tag.

But afaik, the RNC is a stereo thingy only, so you won't be able to compress two channels indepenantly - or am I wrong?

Unfortunately this is true.It is a stereo unit but won't function as a dual mono.

Yes... it's a linked pair, or a single channel only.

But since when is quantity more important than quality?

Does he want a good compressor or a lot of little crappy ones?

Just wanted to make sure he knew... I mean if you expect to get two channels and have one - might be bad...

thanks

thanks.. ill prob order rnc.. and thanks for the explanation..later

Bluebear, why do you almost never record with compression or other devices in the recording chain? Just wondering if there's a reason or just a personal preference.

It amounts to personal preference.... I do it mainly so that I have maximum flexibility later on.... if a particular effect/EQ/comp is an integral part of the sound, then I'll track with it.... but otherwise, I'll save pretty much all processing until mixdown.
