Which mic provides the clearest, crispest, up-close studio type sound? I don't know if im explaining what i want correctly, Basically which mic sounds like a nationally released CD could be recorded on it
This kinda question always makes me a little crazy, since it depends on so many other factors. Here's an example of what I mean:
Right now(and by that, I mean as I'm sitting here typing this), we have Andrew "Mudrock" Murdock in the big studio, working on a possible new single for Slow Roosevelt, and then the group is off to start work on their video for Sony Records. Now Andrew Murdock is a major league producer (Godsmack, Third Strike, Trik Turner, etc.).
Know what we wound up using as drum overheads? A pair of Marshall MXL 603Ss, AND a Cole 4038 ribbon mic. Now, the Coles is around $1,400, but you all know what the Marshalls sell for. The rest of the set isn't a whole bunch of expensive mics, either - a used SM-7 on snare, some used MD504s on all the toms, and the kick has an used ATM25 inside, with a used EV RE-20 just outside the kick. And yeah, this is gonna be a "nationally released CD."
Does the fact that it's going into a board that usta sell new for over $100,000 have anything to do with it? Does the fact that we have
a Great River MP-2NV and a Millinnia Media SST-1 Origin have anything to do with it? The same question applies to vocal mics.
In the next few weeks, we'll have Vanilla Ice in here, Dr. Dre, possibly Eminem, and maybe some of the guys from Linkin Park. We'll also have all of the Studio Projects line of microphones and most of the Marshall line here as well. I'm pretty sure that some of those mics will be keepers for a lot of the tracks.
Almost any mic can be used for anything, but we never know what's gonna work best for one particular vocal. It might be our expensive RCA 44BX, or it might be the $80 SP B1, or it could be our old Beyer Soundstar Mk II, that somebody gave me for free. We never know beforehand.
