hey all... I'm choosing between these mic's to record hip hop and rock vocals...

Audio Technica AT3035
Rode Nt-1
Akg C2000B
Behringer B2
Art HotPack (Tube Mp Preamp, Apex 430 Mic, Pop Filter, Shockmount)

Let me know what to do here.
Thanks a lot!

Which mic provides the clearest, crispest, up-close studio type sound? I don't know if im explaining what i want correctly, Basically which mic sounds like a nationally released CD could be recorded on it

Just my humble opinion but I wouldn't go for any of those particular mics. For under $300 (I've seen them as low as $250) an AT4033 would be my choice.

This kinda question always makes me a little crazy, since it depends on so many other factors. Here's an example of what I mean:

Right now(and by that, I mean as I'm sitting here typing this), we have Andrew "Mudrock" Murdock in the big studio, working on a possible new single for Slow Roosevelt, and then the group is off to start work on their video for Sony Records. Now Andrew Murdock is a major league producer (Godsmack, Third Strike, Trik Turner, etc.).

Know what we wound up using as drum overheads? A pair of Marshall MXL 603Ss, AND a Cole 4038 ribbon mic. Now, the Coles is around $1,400, but you all know what the Marshalls sell for. The rest of the set isn't a whole bunch of expensive mics, either - a used SM-7 on snare, some used MD504s on all the toms, and the kick has an used ATM25 inside, with a used EV RE-20 just outside the kick. And yeah, this is gonna be a "nationally released CD."

Does the fact that it's going into a board that usta sell new for over $100,000 have anything to do with it? Does the fact that we have a Great River MP-2NV and a Millinnia Media SST-1 Origin have anything to do with it? The same question applies to vocal mics.

In the next few weeks, we'll have Vanilla Ice in here, Dr. Dre, possibly Eminem, and maybe some of the guys from Linkin Park. We'll also have all of the Studio Projects line of microphones and most of the Marshall line here as well. I'm pretty sure that some of those mics will be keepers for a lot of the tracks.

Almost any mic can be used for anything, but we never know what's gonna work best for one particular vocal. It might be our expensive RCA 44BX, or it might be the $80 SP B1, or it could be our old Beyer Soundstar Mk II, that somebody gave me for free. We never know beforehand.

Harvey:

If you have the chance, can you please keep us updated about what stuff they end up using? I would like to hear what they can do with the stuff most that of us have and see just how much skill can make the diference.

Thank you!!

AL

harvey, did you ever end up getting any of those guys in the studio?

I really don't think this is a question of whether or not Vanilla Ice is going to be taking the music world by storm using a pair of Marshall 603's on overheads to one of his tracks . . . we already know they hold their own with the best drum mics out there with the right drummer, the right kit and the right room.

. . . And it isn't a question of whether or not Dre or Eminem will be able to convey the same malice towards the world, their mother and the Police . . . Or how many hoes and bitches Snoop will be able to round up using a Studio Projects B1 as opposed to something else on their rap vocal tracks. :D :D

This is a matter of one guy wanting to know what will make the voices he tracks sound the most professional, worthy of commercial CD release, etc.

And the answer is any of them could potentially deliver "studio type" sound, if used in a real commercial studio or similar environment. And any, all, or none of them could sound worthy of a commercial CD, depending on whether or not the singer using it has a voice and talent that is worthy of a commercial CD release.

hey man i just purchased the hot kit.....what is it number 5 on ya list........dont get it as intreguing as it might see with the preamp and the mic.......the preamp is fuckin noisy ahhhhhh i hate it......the mic is good but with no 'switches' for pad or any of that.....its good on a budget dont get me wrong........but u will eventually need to buy another (more expensive) preamp for the sound quality u are lookin for that the art just misses and lacks......in other words u will be wasting ya money......just get a single mic with a fairly good preamp and u will have good quality as long as u have a dope sound card........

and to me i like the b-2 sounds good on mah voice.....test them out at ya local store bro.....see how everything goes then choose from there......never know maybe a cheaper mic sounds better on ya voice then a more expencive one......

Well I think of the AT4033 as a crisp and clean sounding mic and very versitile. It also seems to me to have a very present and cutting sound at times, though not harsh. I'm still a newbie and am just now learning how to get the most out of ADATs, but I like the 4033! I just picked up another one for $150.

On a side note, I am intrigued by the Marshall 603s. I believe thats the model Mars is selling for $60. What kind of sound do they posess?? I just may pick up a pair today. The lower price of condensor mics these days is very pleasing to me, especially since my first pair cost $600 which were AT4033s.
