a different opinion

I have owned one squier bass, one squier strat, TWO PR-350's (epiphone acoustics) and one Epi Casino.

I put new pickups in the squier strat and it's the best sounding and most easily played guitar on either list. The neck is awesome. I bought the bass used, and someone replaced the pots so that sounds great too. I'm kind of a hack at bass, so when I play nicer ones I get jealous of the neck feel, but the squier was certainly the right price ($85!)

The Casino plays great but the pots are extremely noisy. The acoustics have been good writing tools and I don't have to worry about dinging them up. The actually play fairly easy for someone coming to acoustic from electric. Lots of string tension leeway.

Overall though, if someone said you have choose my squier's or my epi's, I would choose to dump the epi's and keep the squiers.

Gee, I'd keep the Epiphone, myself, but this has a lot to do with the fact that I would generally choose a Gibson over a Fender. That's not a criticism of Fender, they just don't fit my hands. The worst are strats, I'm a heavy rythym player, and the only Fenders I really like are teles. I've seen some Squier strats that were playable, but every Squier tele I've ever picked up sucked bigtime.
I've got a lovely Epi SG with a perfect neck and a set of shiny upgraded humbuckers that I wouldn't trade for an American Tele, let alone a Chinese knockoff! Some guy in Indonesia simply got it right or got lucky. I went through 15 of them to find this one.-Richie

Although I only got Sqiure Stratocaster, I will choose Epiphone.

Squire is good. Compared to Fender it's 1 : 10.

Epiphone is great. Compared to Gibson it's 1 : 4.

Nah, don't think so. IMO, Squire is much closer to Fender than Epiphone is to Gibson. QC-wise, that is, and just because Fender has crappy QC. Regarding the looks, Epis are closer to Gibsons, but for sure can't reach the build quality.

Just my 0.02$. (or €, that is)

you have to compare apples to apples. there are some some $700 epiphones that are better than some $179 squires. if you compare a $179 squire strat to a $179 epiphone there is no comparison...the sub-$200 epiphones are more or less toys and not serious instruments and the sqires in that range are very playable.

I think they both make ass kicking guitars for the money. What's the best guitar you can find for under $200.00? I'll bet it's one of these.

Same here. I love my old Squire Guitar and Bass. Still use them in the studio too. Don't want to be seen live with them. ;)

Epi: My opinionated personal experience.

Squire? Gimme a break!! ;) Better yet, gimme the Epiphone any day of the week. :)

I got my Epi Les Paul second hand for about $200, and it kicks ass. It takes some serious abuse, such as changing string gauges and tunings, getting dropped on my toe (OUCH!), and being flailed by a grindcore hack, and it does it all with a smile (or a roar, heh). My buddy's Squire Strat couldn't handle E-flat without needing intonation. The Strat's action just sucked. The volume knob is in such a place that if you do any palm muting you're likely to hit it. The neck wants to bow if you look at it funny. Forget using the tremolo if you want to stay in tune for more than a few measures. No surprise my buddy went out and got himself an SG :) (a Gibson, not Epi -- odd going from the brightest of the bright guitars to the darkest of the dark. Anyway...)

My $200 1990s Epi Les sounds nearly as good (though different, of course) as my buddy's $700+ '99 Gibson SG. Don't get me wrong, I can totally appreciate a Strat sound, but the Squires I've encountered have been tres crappy, and the Epis I've encountered have all been a lot like real Gibsons. In other words, my experience has been the exact opposite of Jimistone's. :) YMMV.

What do you mean am i kidding? I'm dead serious. i play an epi. sg obviously and it could take down any squier any day. Esacton said it all.

What if I make a thread asking which one is better... Gibson or Fender... ? I won't get any answer but "Hey... they're different beast to deal with" I think it goes the same with Epiphone and Squire. I think this thread is more tend to ask which one you like, not which one is better. The shapes are different, the price range are different, the sound they made are different, everything are... so each one had their own pro and cons. For me, I like Epiphone more, cause it's cool for me. Subjective ? yes ! But that's the meaning of this thread. Which you prefer in your sight.

;)

i have a epiphone les paul and everyone of my buddies who try playing it says the playability is awesome.
don't know why but i think that it's just easy to play on and it grows on u
i used to have a squire and now when i play them again i can't stand it

Epiphone SG's are really amazing guitars, especially for the price. From the SG's I've played theres not a huge difference between the Gibson Sg and the Epiphone.
As for Squires, big difference. Then again, the only squires I've played have been badly looked after 'coz there only Squires.
I'd still go with the Epiphone though. I love the Epiphone SG!

If you know what i mean then dont make a reply about how you know but you just want to bitch about it.

I am not even going to read this thread...I am too busy trying to decide if I should throw an Apple or an Orange at you.

I just played a squier yesterday at lessons .. must say it wasn't too bad buy my epiphone plays alot better. Also i think the fat strat headstocks are so ugly it reminds me of fuckin tom delonge.

It's the market positioning, dummy...

With either brand, you play before you buy.
With either brand, you can get an awesome bang for the buck.
With either brand, you play before you buy.
With either brand, you can find diamonds hidden in piles of glass.
With either brand, you play before you buy.

See a pattern here?
