If anyone is interested in a cheap D.I. box for recording a guitar or bass direct,Radio Shack makes an adaptor thats just a tube about 5 inches long with a 1/4 inch unbalanced hi-z input on one end and a balanced male xlr output on the other.Costs about $15.
Model 274-017C

I belive this is what a passive D.I. box does.It really made a big differance when I record direct.

You can also get a ground lifter from Pro Co that will attach to the xlr end of it,female xlr in male out.
I special ordered it from Guitar center for about $12.
Model GlX Ground lifter.

Iv'e read that a ground lifter is supposed to help elimiate hum but it didn't seem to make much of a differance. The Radio Shack adapter is pretty quiet by itself.

Hope this helps ,
Pete

Radio Shack and Quiet?????? Ive never heard those in the same sentence before.

It's an impedance matching transformer that lowers the impedance of the guitar signal (usually high to very high with an acoustic setup) to low, more compatible the expectations of an XLR input of an amp or of some boards. A mixing board can also feature high impedance jacks that make this unnecessary; they can function as their own "D.I. boxes," after a fashion. Some have channel jacks that accept a pretty wide range of imedance.

Like anything else, there are degrees of quality. The Radio Shack unit is what you can expect of a $12.00 transformer. It's passive, so it's quiet. I've got one in my box of tricks, along with pliers and duct tape. But don't expect it to compete with a SansAmp DI or something of that nature.

Try parts express, they advertise here at the website, I have bought alot of stuff from them including DB's at a very good price.
