im at a loss at which one I should get as a big upgrade from my Samson C01

I got from reading around here that the 4047 provides a warm tone thats awesome on male vocals and just decent when micing cabs and acoustic guitar.

the 4050 does very well at everything, not awesome, not bad. Also, the ability to switch patterns provides a lot more versatility compared to the 4047.

I'm going to be using it mainly for just recording male vocals (a little deeper than elliott smith vocals), acoustic guitar and harmonica. Every once in a while ill recording electric guitar, mandolin, and banjo.

I'm leaning towards the 4050 because of its versatility and it seems like everybody has one in their mic locker.

help me out here :D. Theres no music stores around here where I can try em out and $400-$500 is a loooot for me.

Well, at some point, I'm going to have TWO of them, again. :)

One thing I can't speak fully to is the difference between the early version (AT 4050/CM5) and the current version (AT 4050). I've seen the frequency response charts, but I have only used the older, CM5 version. Maybe we have some folks here who have used both extensively?

Cheers,

You likely won;t be disappointed with either... however for male vocals the 4047 would win for me. I have a pair of 4050s and love them as they sound great on nearly everything, but I have never loved them on male vocals. I think the FET sound would chill out a bit of what I don't like on the 4050 when used with male vocals.

from what i understand, the 4047 is the shit on male vox

in fact, if you look at the back of that duets album that tony bennett put out last year, there's a pic of 2 music stands with...you guessed it, 4047's set up in front of them
