tell me if this is possible:

i am running 2 guitars into my mixer, but want to throw some effects in there, so i'd like to know if i can use my BOSS ME-30 (or any effects pedal for that matter) as an AUX send/return. i've tried it (even with 1 guitar) and i get some major clipping. should it be theoretically possible to use any effects pedal as an AUX send/return loop? if so, do i just need to play around with the levels some more to make sure i don't get so much clipping?

I'm no expert or anything, so if anybody wants to correct me, please do.

Most guitar effects have inputs designed to take a signal from a guitar, which isn't too strong unless it has active electronics, so when you feed it a signal from a mixer, which is stronger than that of a guitar, its gonna be a bit hotter. If you can get rid of the clipping I don't see why it would be a problem though.

The main rules for recording the way I see it, are:

1. If it sounds good, do it

2. If it sounds good but it messes your equipment up don't do it unless (see rule #3)

3. If you have the money to buy new gear all the time and want to do something that will mess up your gear, see rule #1.

Well put :D

Yes, it should work, and yes, you'll have to play with levels. Try brining your main aux bus down. Generally, effects like distortion really don't sound very good when running 2 guitars through it though. Reverbs & delays should sound fine though.
