I know that "The Master Handbook of Acoustics" by F. Alton Everest is considered a bible on this forum. Nothing I am about to say refutes that. But, I got the thing a while ago, hoping it would help in my impending studio construction and it isn't helping much.

To say it is dense is an understatement. Given its subject matter, that is unavoidable. But potential buyers should understand it is a primary source reference book. It is full of the physical underpinings of sound and its behavior. It has little in the way of practical applications.

I know it is not the intention of the book to serve as a build your own studio cookbook and for that professionals will applaud it. However, for novices like myself, it is more useful to have a more practical text with procedural information that in turn, in gleaned from references such as MHoA.

This is a serious reference text that needs to be gradually comprehended. As such, it doesn't really summon up immediate applications. Rather, it serves to describe the fundamental mathematics and physics of its subject matter.

I'm not saying don't buy it. If you really want to get deep deep into acoustics and studio design, it is indispensable. If however, you are a musician who wants to put together a cool sounding studio, you are better advised to stick with Everest's 12 Plans for Small Studios book.

Peace,
