I walk the line
Is the SansAmp useful in getting a 'clean' sound also, or do you guys just use it to get a simulated tube amp, or 'growly' sound?

The SansAmp will definitely do a fine job of providing clean bass sounds.

clean as clean can be.

depends how you set it, and hook it up. It will really boost the preamp of your head/amp in tone if you hook it straight in, then depending on your amp and its settings if it will be clean sounding.

If you just use it alone as a DI, like i do for recording and live(its all i use live, no amp, no cab, just my bass, pick, fingers do the talking) then it will in my opinion make your bass sound clean as any definition of clean you can think of and cut through the bottom end of things.

do what i did, go into your music store of choice, hook up a bass rig through the pa system that is set up at the store. mic it and DI it throught the head.

then run just the sansamp through the mains

compare the sounds you hear.

i gaurantee youll go with the sansamp. The only downside is this. How important is your stage sound to you?, what kind of sound systems are you used to playing through? you are at the mercy of the stage monitors at whatever clubs you play at, and your sound isnt right there next you like some peeps like.

If you just need it for recording then for sure get one. If you want it as another preamp to your rig, then you need to play with it a little to see if it is right for you.

YUP !!!

I solved that problem by getting my own good quality powered monitor and working it into the chain so that it pretty much functions as a clean power amp and speaker for the SansAmp's preamp.

thats a great idea. what kind/brand did you get? how many watts??I tried a cheaper one, but blew it up at my first rehersal with it, so it kinda scared me off from doing it again, although i did get a full refund.

I was able to pick up a used Mackie SRM350 for a decent price. They go for $550 new (a little pricey), but I got it for just under $300. Mackie actually sells it as one of their active mains speakers, but it does a decent job as a floor monitor too. It's got a total of 195 watts of power, split in a bi-amped design with 30 watts for the high-frequency driver and 165 for the low. It also has some EQ controls and other bass boost functions, but I mostly just leave it flat. It is something of a tradeoff, because its frequency response is really only accurate down to about 60Hz...below that you need a subwoofer. A good bass amp will be able to hit lower than 60Hz.
