Hello.

I am in the process of recording an album for my rock band.

My guitar is Yamaha N5A with pretty solid, good bass sound. The entonation is quite ideal and the strings are new. It has active pickups and is really good stuff. In my previous demo recordings I used this guitar directly through my Laney amp and it has worked well. In adition to that, I also have Line 6 Bass POD XT Live.

For my current project, I am trying to have new, natural, original bass sound with wide variety of range. My idea is to have great sounds like Placebo, Cure or David Bowie have had upon a time.

My question is, how can I sound Yamaha N5A Bass and Line 6 Bass POD XT Live together to have bass sound that I have tried to define above. I would really appreciate it if someone could share his/her ideas, information.

Thanks so much....

Natural? And new.

To me, "natural" means unprocessed, like "natural foods". New? There is nothing new under the sun.

If you want a natural sound, you will either mic the amp or run your bass direct in to the mixing board.

Hello ek1.

I am also a bassist, so maybe I can help you.

You have good gear. You can get good sounds out of it. But the sound you are looking for is a relatively low-fi sound - The Cure and Davis Bowie are not exactly on the cutting edge of tone technology.

What you need to do is experiment. There is no "David Bowie" setting on your POD or your bass. You need to play, change settings, play some more, tweak some more, and just keep experimenting untill you find it. There is little chance of anyone sounding exactly like anyone else unless you have the same gear they have, and even if you do, YOU have a huge influence on the sound by how you play.

I suggest you begin with your active pickups eq setting (little knobs on your bass) almost perfectly flat, with the highs (and maybe the lows) turned down a bit, and just play with the mids untill it sounds close without any amp eq at all. Then, on your pod, try and find a "soft" sounding preset without much high end bite and a lot of clearly defined low mids.

Just a suggestion of where to start. Your sound will be your sound.....it is better to have a good original sound than a not so good copy of someone else's sound.

Good luck.
