Hi guys,

It's been a while. Busy work schedule had kept me away from my hobby. Well I guess I'll jump in straight where I left off.

I am interested in knowing whether I can apply some efects (If so, how?) to my Cool Edit Live recording.

Actually in this case I dont really want to record but want to apply effects to speeches or live effents to give the output a good sound.

By the way my recording still registers a humming noise and I want to get rid of it.

well I guys you guys are panishng me for being away this long.

Isnt there atlest a piece of software that can accomplish this task?
cheers

...No reply as far, so let me start one.

Recording speech ?
Did you record it dry ? good. First, clean the audio from the noises. Cool Edit has tons of feature to clean anykind of noises. Hum, Hiss, 60 cycles hum, Mic noises, etc. Then you must know what kind of noises are there. At least, how do you figure they sound. I don't know what's your precision, but generally, I'll select the -no signal- part of the wave, open the noise reduction menu, and -get profile from selection. (Effect --> noise reduction --> noise reduction). Save it. Back to the wave block, select all, then reduce the noise based on the saved noise profile. Here you go, you have cleaner wave block. If it becomes too glitchy, then undo, and do the same thing with lower noise reduction level.

After that, if you find your wave has a lot of spikes (over fluctuating signals), then you may want to compress it. (Effect --> Amplify --> Dynamic Processing). The preset's worth to try as starting point to your need. You're able to preview the result. Adjust as you like. Whoop laah...

Now you have better shaped wave block, here you can playing around with colour of the wave. (slightly chorused, eq, pitch down/up, etc...)

Finally, add the reverb if you wish to make it smooth & roomy. Plate would be a good start. 1.8 ms decay time would be just fine. But don't mix too much reverb, it will kill the pronounce & you might end hearing grumbling instead of speaking a word. Once again, as there are many preset featured, they would be helpfull to be a starting point... Hope it helps.

 Papa James

I meant in real time. I want to be able to speak but my output laced with an effect. If I am making (or someone else is) making a speech, I want to be to listen to the effects as I speak.

With Cool Edit ? I don't think so. You must record it first as a wave before adding any effect. But, if your sound card has special firm ware (like Sound Blaster Live! has EAX) it can be done from there... :) BTW, what's your PC & sound card ?

Effects in a PA system are usually added in the PA system itself. Many PA mixers these days have built in reverb, or else you can patch in an outboard box. TC, Digitech, and Lexicon all have some very useable units for a couple of hundred dollars.

Well I was wondering if there is another recording software I could use. Since I already have the computer, why not improvise? We Africans are well known for that in time of need.

I caught something sometime back (dont remember where) that suggested Cubase can do what I want. True?

There are a bunch of programs that can do realtime effects on the incoming signal so that you actually here them while playing or speaking, i know SONAR can do it, and probably cubase. The only problem, depending on your computer, is the time it takes for the computer to process and then output the incoming signal. This lag might make it impossible to use these programs for speech.

N-track is a very inexpensive software that can do that.

What specs does your computer have?

BTW, Cool to hear someone from Africa is round here!

Are you talking about recording software ?
Recording software is for recording man... there you can put effect after that. I think you just wanna ADD effect (chorus/reverb things) to your speech in real time so you can her it better on your PA system, right ? then don't pick recording software. Use real time audio effect software. I remember Anwida release 'em for free (the lite version). Downloadable. Check their site, or Google it.

Yes, but it might be better if you tell us what you got up there. What's your PC ? and most of all, what's your sound card ? Many manufactured card like Creative's SoundBlaster Live! came along with AudioHQ & EAX, which can be used to manipulate input signal and add effect to the output in real time. So you don't have to improve anything. Simple and plain.

No, that's not true. Anyway, this should be simple task, and doesn't require complex software like Cubase to do, unless you need to do multitracking/mixing things. Why would you spend a big cash buying these expensive software for doing this simple task ? Thank's.

BTW, we have a same name... James :D

Thanx guys you've all been a great help again. Spin Audio's Effects Processor seems to do what I want though there's a slight delay as said.

Maybe I'll have to stick to getting a good mixer that'll do what I want- dont know for how long I'd have to save for that. ha

I have looked at many of the snaps you guys have for studios and must admit the studios you have are better than the best in my country. You can go to a studio that's been operating for years and a guy will ask you what is an mp3.

Maybe some of you guys ought to look at some investment here for there's a lot of talent. Thing is, we can not afford the gear that is required for recording.

Something to chew on, eh.

Again thanx
