Just got it - anyone have any pointeres on how to use it.

Thanks, Ed. It is good to hear an expert like you verify what I have felt all along.

On The philosophical level - I agree completetly. On the practical level, i may have to use it, so I need to know how it works.

On the philosophical level, some people were not meant to sing. On the practical level, many of them do.

I hear practice makes perfect! ;)

Sometimes perfection is out of reach. Sometimes you have no choice but to use whatever talent is at hand.

Thanks Wallycleaver!

Autotune surely removed the honesty out of performance! It is like a drum machine.

I can think of NO justification for using it.

Unfortunately - no way of telling you how to use it, the best way is to pull up some tracks and start playing with it.

I'm not at my DAW so this is from memory. Assuming you are talking about the plug-in version, here's a quick-start suggestion. In the key box, select equal-tempered. Set the slider about halfway between fast and slow, the other one about halfway between choosy and relaxed. Adjust to taste. Too fast and choosy will sound obvious as the plug acts on the sound.

FWIW, I agree with the others. This is the scourge of modern music. I have to go shower now.

it's much better to get the singer to sing the track in pitch, but if you've got the expression from the singer, but pitch is slightly gone, you're better off using auto tune, than trying to get the same expression out of the singer again. you could be there a while!

autotune sounds great on dance vocals, mind you, it's so overused these days.

I was mixing a track last week and i brought up the auto tune plug in (Mackie D8B version) on the guitar solo. it sounded ace! gave it a really wierd sound. you just gotta try it out:-)

Did you get the hardware or the plug in? which plug in. i have the hardware too , but it's so much easier just hitting a plug-in on the mixer.bit easier to program aswell.

I mainly use it as an effect generator.
I agree with everyone - it is something that should not be neccissary. I once spend a week (A WEEEEEKK!!!!!!!) on auto tune correcting all the vocals and backing vocals on the tracks of a very very famous female "vocalist", who shall remain nameless.
NEVER again.
The thing its really good for is when you have that one take with the perfect, brilliant feel, and just a couple of notes slightly out.

Auto Tune

I agree Sjoko2. That was my point in the post about my vocals suck..... I do find the plug in good for fixing a note that is just a cent or so off on that great vocal track.

then one would suppose that EQ's, Compressors, Punch In Takes and the like are out of the question for you... :)

this isn't necessarily about Honest Performances, whatever that is, it's about creating a final recording that sounds good. if AutoTune can help, then it's no different than an EQ or compressor. all can be abused and all have their place.

it's sad, bdemenil is asking for advise and all he's getting is grief.

those are ususally the people that have money too. So I say use it.

Oooooooo, the tough guys show up late in the game. The ringers if you will. Cool.

Trying to compare AutoTune to an eq and/or compressor is absolutely silly. But do keep it up. I just might feel inspired to rant on this....;) I WILL however give in to how sjoko2 uses AutoTune. But even then, I still have heard many great vocal recordings where the singer went flat/sharp and I can hardly notice, nor care. I think this idea of "perfection in performance" is starting to get out of hand. Maybe it is all the live sound and recording I have done in the last 8 months that fuels this.

Four words....

VOCAL LESSONS AND PRACTICE....

So what are you going to do live?? Autotune? Don't think so. And punch-ins are not even in the same category...

....ALL vocalists - even the best in the biz - use punch-in's. It's not even the same concept because it still IS YOUR performance.

If you are going to autotune just call in Millie Vanillie or whomever the hell they are and have THEM sing for you...geesh!

As a vocalist, don't even get me started !!

:) WC...true at times....but doesn't that refute your argument??

I would say they did it (sing flat) and were still successful even though they did....
