I really would like to upgrade my current OH pair (Shure BG4.1s). I can't decide whether to get AKG 451bs or a pair of AKG 414 buls. I know it is another LD vs. SD question, but I really would like to know which to get.

Thanks in advance,
Eric

FBstdminime,

Have you listened to any of those mics? How did you decide on those two? It's a good thing you're getting rid of the BG's! I have one and and to me it sucks! It's the worse mic I have in my collection.

I narrowed it down by research (online and asking people), and as for hearing them... it would be kinda difficult to go to a music store and ask them to set up some mics as drum OH. Besides, I would probably be being these off of ebay. I don't know anybody that owns a pair either...

A good working rule: take any advice Pipeline gives pretty seriously.

But my take: Great drum tracks have been historically recorded with pairs of either of those mics, so I would base my decision on the consideration of what other mics you already own.

If you already have some other good quality large diaphragms, i might lean towards getting the 451's. That way, if you need some small diaphragms for other applications (when they aren't being used as overheads) like on an acoustic guitar, piano, percussion overdubs, etc you'll have them. I'm assuming this might be the case, because if you already had better small diaphragms, (like Oktava MC012's) you probably wouldn't be using the BG's as overheads.

Since the 451's are cheaper than the 414's, even if you don't have a good large diaphragm for use on vocals, etc. you'll almost have enough via the price difference to get one decent quality LD for vocals, etc. (KSM27, Baby Bottle, or something Chinese).

Interesting... My main vocal mic (and currently my only LD condenser, though I am thinking about adding on a C1 to my collection if I don't get the 414s) is a Shure KSM32. So I guess I should be leaning towards the 451s?

the 451's will be great especially for an exagerated stereo sound.
Also, the meanest engineer in the world, uses them taped to 57's for miking snares

I must have lucked out, as i found a Shure BG 4.1 awhile back for 50 bucks and it sounds amazing. I'd love to find a second one, so if anybody wants to get rid of one, e-mail me. I also have a colleague who likes mine so much, he wants a pair for himself.

Anyway, I thought I'd add a question. Anybody used the Rode NT5 matched pair yet?

Also, most people I've talked to say an X-Y pattern is best for drum OH, but I've recently learned about a mid-side pattern. Anyone tried that?
