I've been told my carte amp isnt the best for recording so I'm kidna looking for a new one. I've been looking into the Mesa line.. but they are expensive. I am kinda partial to having a crunchy "thick" distotion on my amp also...I've also heard the combo amps are the best to record with. well thanks..

When I think crunchy and thick I think Marshall. You can find used Marshall amps for pretty good deals out there. The thing is there are alot of them out there, so the price keeps pretty decent. Especially the combos, which aren't as demended as heads.

If you're using a Crate, probably any decent all tube amp will be an upgrade for you. For a really tight distortion you should think about a head/cab or a closed back combo. Open back sombos tend to sound a little looser when recorded. I personally like that, but its a personal preference there.

Yeah, Hard2Hear is right about anything being an upgrade from a crate. I tend to use either a Marshall DSL or TSL combo or a Peavey XXX combo when I record. I've gotten very good results from both. I would highly suggest driving out to any shop that sells either and checking them out. The Marshalls are going to give you a smoother distortion and the XXX is going to give you a thicker distortion (IMO).

I just picked up a Rivera Pubster just for recording. It's 25 watts all tube into a 10". I love this amp.

i LOOOVED my mesa head and cab... but i had to sell it off... i cried, it was hard. it was one of the best sounding amps ive heard recorded. it was a blast. but... the downside... mesas will blow you fucking balls off... and to get that huge mesa sound you really need to have it cranked pretty hot... so if you dont have a good soundproof house or room, you might run into trouble. i know when we were recording, the lady 3 houses down called the cops on us... it was pretty fuckin' cool.
