Not expensive guys. I read the freaking mic poll and wanted to cry. I guess a 16 year old kid cant compare to you jerks working 50 hours at the CVS. Just kidding! Seriously, the studio projects C1? even the b1? Saving money is good. I need a quality mic to really sound great on both rock and acoustic stuff. I know Harvey could help me out on this one.
I already have a couple 57's, a 603s, and two mxl 2001s (i know they suck, but i got them long ago, and they arent terrible as drum overheads). Let me reiterate: IM 16! DONT tell me to get a Neumann.
This is all to finish up recording an ep that im working on with some friends of mine, i would like youre cruitiques when im done! Thanks to all of you guys, I have learned so much from many of you.

The C1 is nice man, will totally do the job, but on the other hand you had better get a Neuman. I wish I did back when I was 16 and old men still paid to blow me.

at 16 I was using the built in mic of a boom box so dont give us that "IM only 16" routine

Sam Ash has the Marshall mxlv67B for $89...get it quick.....you already have a pretty decent mic collection and that would round it out.....

A behringer b-3? Do those not suck horribly? I have a few pieces of behringer gear and have come to find that some of their stuff is excellent and works quite well, while others are better paper weights.

try an at 4033. they arent to expensive.
being 16 is good, that will give you plenty of time to save up for a neumann or a brauner.

Technically, a 4033 isn't a large diaphram mic but it is a dandy. They're getting harder to find too. A 4040 can be had for a street price of $300. It is a large diaphram.

The Shure Ksm range are quite lovely. They have a really mellow bottom end which i liked the sound of. Have you considered the Rode Ntk? Failing that the NT1000. I recommend the Ntk as it is a tube mic which sounds beautifully sweet for the amount of money you spend on it. The Nt1000 is like its lil brother. A nice mic but just a bit thinner and has some more mids in the response. Id have no trouble recommending either for what you want to do though.

Yeah i definetly want the NTK as my frst tube mic, but i dont have enough money yet. I think im gonna get the Studio projects c1 for now. Those ATs seem nice though.

I have a 3035 and I don't care for it much. It's kind of harsh sounding.
No experience with the C-1.

Science, there's really no way of knowing which mic is going to be better, because they all sound different on different voices, not to mention everyone has a different idea of what sounds good to them.

Generally speaking, the AT3035 and the C1 are both highly-regarded in their price bracket, for instance. But there are many others.

i've demo'ed the at3035 in the store. i thought it compared favorably to an akg c414b/uls. in fact, i preferred the at3035. of course, tracking is another matter.

i kind of don't buy the thing about the at3035 being on the harsh end of things. it works pretty damn good on female vocalists. i know that longwave has used one on amy phillips. does he still post here?

it sounded very good to me.

on the c1, i love the c1. i think it's great on most male vocalists. if you are going this route then i recommend buying from www.humbuckermusic.com

although it's not a condensor, i also recommend the shure beta 58 for the $200 and under price range.

I just did sound for a 3 day spoken word festival and used an AT 4055 large diaphram stage mic. (supposedly designed for Mick Jagger) I am now raving!!! It handled soft female voices (even moving on and off mic), Loud shouters, males that ate the mic and others that whispered into it. They all sounded crystal clear and with no sibilance. Neumman would be better but for the price this one rocks (and talks).
I can't wait to try it in the studio.
