Hi guys. I've been able to pass down some of my Alesis knowledge, so now I'm hoping you can do the same.

I'd like to do computer editing/manuilaption of my audio tracks. I don't know if I can use ADAT-pcr solution because I'm using an analog board. Is it possible to hook the ADAT card up- edit the tracks and bounce them back without having a digital board?

I've also heard harsh commentary about these cards I'm hoping you guys can help clear up. Thanks.

The ADAT edit card uses the optical digital ports on the ADAT to get to and from the computer. Your mixing board will have nothing to do with transfering the tracks.

Basically you have heard bad things about the Edit card because it is not very versatile, and the software that comes with it is junk!!!

It would appear that the Dakota card is a much better deal for just a few bucks more.

You can always get a MOTU 2408 and record up to 3 ADATs (24 Tracks) at one time to your PC via the lightpipe. You can have up to three MOTU 2408 connected to ONE of their PCI cards; that's nine ADATs (72 tracks), but I don't know of too many computers that can handle that kind of capacity.

another point to consider is that just because a card/breakout has adat lightpipe and can transfer the digital data, it doesn't mean it will transfer the adat time code. to my knowledge, only the adat edit and the dakota will read/write adat time code. unless you have a bcr in which you can use midi. i agree that the adat edit is limilted, but it's half the price of the dakota and it's the only thing out there that will act like an adat and control/respond with other adats. for $250, i think it's a cool thing. hope this helps,

The PCI card for the MOTU 2408 does have an ADAT sync port. I do not use ADATs in my studio so I cannot tell you how well it works with them. I would tend to belive that you would want to transfer all of the tracks at one time when using the MOTU 2408. I have the MOTU 2408 and the MOTU 1224. I am planning to add an Alesis AI-3 to my 2408 to increase my ballanced I/O. The main reason i went with the MOTU system is that they have LED metters to monitor my levels during recording. (I used to own a Gina & Layla which did not have this feature.)

I have the pcr card and am new to home record
ing but have had no problems with it. The adat edit software may be junk but it is just
an extra that comes with the card. You could
download it for free if you wanted to run it.The card might not be versatile but is ad-
equit for bumping back and forth from adat to
computer.
