A fun recording rig

OK, so I do a lot of my recording with either one or two SM-80s. Lately, I've started to take advantage of the fact that my MixPre can operate on batteries, as can my MicroTrack. I've taken to recording all kinds of musical ideas in the studio without touching the computer. It may sound weird but sometimes my musical ideas emerge only if I don't have to associate with a computer. If I just have to push one little button and start playing, it's much better.

I just plug the mikes into the MixPre, and plug the tape out into the MicroTrack to record. I monitor as I play on the MixPre's headphone output and then switch to the tape return setting to monitor the playback off the MicroTrack. The whole rig just follows me around wherever I am in the studio so I don't have to move around to get the recording started and stopped. If I get something worth adding to, I just pop the .wav file into the DAW and start from there. I've used the rig occasionally on remote projects, but never bothered to use it in the studio until recently. Very cool!

I completely agree with your post. I have a rough time getting a loose feel to my recordings when up against so many variables. I just got a PXR4 off of ebay and it's a gem for remote recording (like recording in trees and by ponds or where ever inspiration hits). I just put in some AA's and plug in my SM57 (with an impedance adapter) and I'm on my way to Jandek-ness. I used to have a Zoom PS02 which was good in the portability department but weaker in the sound department than the PXR4.

I've been wanting to get the MicroTrack. That, along with the small MSH mics makes it real easy to get high quality portable recordings.

Wish I was rich. So much shit I want...

Hey, a 57 could knock out a potential mugger cold, and still record a quick vocal take.

I suppose in this day and age you need to carry some sort of protection just in case some one tries mug you. Id say due to its weight and aerodynamics a 57 would be better than numb chucks

But it might look kinda dodgy in your trouser pocket. Parks are a notorious place for like minded singers to go and "swap microphone techniques" You don't want to get yourself in trouble with the law like George Michael.
