2 Preamp and Interface tracks

I'm tracking drums with a tube ultrasound pre, and a lexicaon alpha interface. My question to everyone is what mics you would put onto the pre (2 oh, 1 snare, 1kick, 2 toms). And how you would use the interface, I currently run the whole mix from a mixer, into the interface in stereo(because the toms, and overheads need to be panned).

But i have the ability to use two mono tracks and edit some of the drums specifically, but the whole situation is very frustrating, it seems like i got a better sound without all this gear.

My first opinion for the pre would be, naturally, kick and snare, but I heard overheads to warm the whole mix up.

record everything and mix it down, then run your stereo signal through the preamp and re record it, essentially running your entire kit through the preamp, after recording it, if you need more control, you could run each individual mic through this way as well
