Well, its better than watching cricket and baseball.....wait, you might be onto something there....USP's etc. Lets get an audience profile done....talk to potential advertisers;)

during his babysitting duties
Uh oh, Paul. BABYSITTING??? Don't you realize they are HIS OWN kids. How can you call it babysitting when it's HIS kids.

...sorry, just experiencing a few flashbacks there for a moment. :)

Chuck, the Yanks are a 1/2 game out as of this morning - with their win over the Mets and Boston's loss to Atlanta.

And today Clemons and Piazza get to kiss and make up (let's hope not literally, Acidrock).

Sorry for this coastal erosion moment, guys. Your web site idea just got me overexcited, and football season is still a couple of months away.

Funny thing Mike. Sox fans are usually over the edge when the Yankees get this close. But I think many are buoyed by the outcomes of the head-to-head games. Pedro pitched well last night, but we really need Ramirez back.

Paul, let me translate the last paragraph into the Queen's English for you...

"Blah, blah, blah,... coastal erosion....Blah, blah, ....look, there's a tree,....blah, blah, Red Sox, Yankees...blah, blzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz............................."

Of course, in copious amounts...why do you thing cricket is so big in the West Indies:D

I read the thread you indicated with great interest, and as I speak USA have just beaten Mexico, a much favoured and admired outside bet 2-0 in a thrilling game that has everyone absolutely gob smacked (gob=mouth, smacked...you get the picture;) )

On Friday this week when england play either Brazil or Belgium, it will be an unofficial national holiday here in England. Unfortunately, I will be working in Wales where they will be supporting whoever we are playing, just like in Scotland and Ireland so I will have to be careful.

BTW, fathers day I got some shirts and ........new monitor speakers:D I have to choose which ones. I feel a new post coming on.......:D

Well as long as there's beer involved it can be considered a sport.
Can you say fishing?
I recieved the windows xp upgrade and of course the obligatory shirts.
Man between that and Chucku's settings for VS880 settings I should be a very busy boy for the next week or so.
The good news is that my fathers day party and my mud room remodel job are done so I might actually be able to record something provided I don't blow up my system with these new settings.
Paul who do you shop from over there, are you going online or to a store?
I'm assuming you have something akin to musicians friend or the like.

Looks like Clemons did'nt bring his A game on saturday, that turned out to be a over hyped let down.I'd love to see him take one in the kisser.
That DH rule sucks!

that turned out to be a over hyped let down
Did you expect anything else? I am sure Estes missed him on purpose. Can you imagine being the one who hit RC in the head and ended the career of a 6 time Cy Young winner. On the other hand, he had to do something. So this was probably a reasonable compromise. The real payback was when both he and Piazza homered.

Paul, congrats on the new monitors. Let us know what you decide to get. For my Dad's Day I got the pleasure of taking my kids out for dinner. :)

I wrote a new song which I played for my daughter. She said she would like to use it for her wedding song. That made me smile - even though she is not engaged at the moment.

USA Soccer team still hasn't grabbed anyone's attention over here, despite making it to the quarterfinals.

Hey guys I'm back!

Been working away from home again this week and have only just got my computer system set up at my new company. I nearly died through withdrawl symptoms:)

USA beating Mexico and the lack of reaction/recognition by citizens of the US actaully made the BBC 10 o clock news. Only beaten by the stunning victory of Korea over co favourites, Italy.

The US team now faces Germany, another strong team. It will be an interesting tie. England is facing favourites, Brazil and the whole country is gearing up for it, I have never witnessed anything like the hysteria and media interest it is causing here. I'm working in a "foreign" country, Wales which is all rooting for Brazil:mad:

Looks like my choice of monitors will be Yamaha MSP 5's:( Two reasons, cost and space. We have a specialist dealership in the UK called Digital Village which are in most cities. Nowhere near the choice that you guys get, and at loaded prices too:(

But I'm open to alternative suggestions......anything is better than the crap speakers I have now:)

Mike, I got the "Dinner with my wife and kids" thing too. They paid:D But with my money;)

2:30 in the morning, thats about when the soccer game is on.A weekday no less.
Man does'nt the rest of the world know we Americans don't play that game?
I want my sports delivered at my convenience....ah howzabout NOON ON SUNDAY!
Yeah I know thats the me first,me again then you attitude of a typical American but hey at least we're not french!
Oh man that XP upgrade is the gift that keeps on giving,I had to upgrade my antivirus($30),my cd burning software is not XP compatible($99) and I can no longer use my gigasampler:( .
But man it sure does run smooth, and those wdm drivers are the real deal....could it be that windows is starting to mature?
No suggestions on monitors here, just buy the best you can afford,I've got hafler M5's nothing special but light years ahead of the consumer stuff.
Peering at the Packers schedule I see that both the Jets and the Patriots will recieve a butt whoopin' this year,ah yes it sure is great living in the land of great football((American style the real stuff)!;)

Y'know, I was hell-bent on monitor speakers for the longest time. I went to guitar center on my day off a few weeks ago and tried out the Event 20/20 BAS and the comparably priced KRK's (I think). $600-$800 range, I guess.
I brought a CD of my own mixes with me and the same songs that I had mixed in a pro studio, trying to compare what I'd been hearing through my cheap Bose bookshelves, what I heard at the studio and what I was hearing on the monitors at GC.........

Not worth it.

I think this whole monitor thing is a scam. I didn't hear anything, either with more life or less on these monitors than I was hearing at home. The only real advantage I can think that monitors might give me is their robustness. The ability to play an instrument thru them and to play back loudly without blowing them maybe. But for the money, I can blow out 10 pairs of my current speakers before it would cost me what a pair of these monitors would.

And I want to buy monitors, too. It's not about being cheap. So many people emphasize this part of the signal chain as the most important, but so far, I'm not convinced.

Acidrock, I feel your pain with the XP/burner software. It gets worse. I said, "Screw microsoft and EZ CD Creator. I'm using Nero burner software. Uninstalled the old EZ CD Creator. Installed Nero. It works ok, but EVERY time I reboot the machine, I get an error message relating to the old burner software. It will not uninstall completely and if you try to manually delete the files, Windows will not even SEE your CD drives.
The friend who built my DAW with me and the PC with XP on it is
Microsoft certified and works in Network Admin. He spent an hour trying to uninstall these files. The solution he came up with: Get the new version of the software, download the XP patch (there is one, you know), install. So in order to uninstall these two piddly files, I am forced to get the software anyway, whether I want EZ CD Creator as my burner software or not. Incidently, Microsoft now owns Roxio, maker of the software. Nice.

Question for Bill Gates: Why do we need to buy software to burn CD's? Did we need extra software to copy files to a floppy? A Zip drive?

Now football. Real football. With what they gave us last season - a heart-stopping Super Bowl victory - the Patriots get a free ride here in New England. They could go 1-15 as long as the win is against the J-E-T-S Jets in the new stadium.

I am soooooo depressed:( England lost 2-1 to Brazil. So enough of that soccer shit lets move on....:D

Very interesting comments on the monitors Chuck cos I think the same. I heard the KRK's and they sounded different....but I could not say "much better than..." the Yammie's. And at three times the price I feel I should have been able to say that.

I have consumer speakers at the moment, so anything will sound better.

So I'm still intending to go with the MSP 5's.

I haven't recorded a thing for weeks now cos of work, fathers day, re-modelling work at home and other stuff.

Maybe I'll burn something this weekend.

Paul, I knew about England's loss because one of the Irish immigrants I work with was very happy.

I'm at work couldn't find the US-Germany match on radio (7:30 am start time)and in order to listen to it, I called home and had my wife leave the phone next to the TV while I had the speakerphone on at work. It worked well. The broadcast sounded as if, despite the loss, the US team carried the play throughout much of the match.

I predict no rioting in major US cities.

There are too many people logged in right now so the server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later. Sorry!

Jeez!!!!!! I nearly died of fright, bin tryin for nearly four minutes to log on. Thats a first.

Chuck, I am very impressed with your efforts to listen to the match but I thought u said u weren't interested in soccer?

(Why is the smilie icon missing on this forum...or is it just me? All the others are there, but not the smilie one)

Mike, I know Acidrock is babysitting his own kids. I realise that but ain't that just like a woman? She gets you to make her have kids and then she expects you to look after them;) rofl:D
Next thing you know she'll be wanting shoes on her feet to walk around with. Bloody cheek. (isnt it amazing how brave you can be when you know she isn't watching what you post:D )

Have a good weekend, I've just come home from working away this week and she's painted the lounge and cut the grass and trimmed the hedges. I think I'll stay....if she lets me.

Chucku you are a heretic, had you made such blasphemous statements about monitors in an equipment forum the natives would be lined up outside your door with pitchforks and torches!;)
I must respectfully disagree, the biggest difference I've noticed in my amp/monitors is that as you turn the volume up the response stays the same. Also because the amp is of higher quality it does'nt overheat which will affect the sound.
I have a full blown modular stereo,a mini system,a boom box and both my wifes car stereo and my truck stereo.I use all of them in addition to my monitors to get a feel for my mix.(got a pair of roland ma-8's too)It's hands down my Haflers and they're considered "low end" by professional standards .
As a for instance in my old truck I used to do a lot of listening and I would tailor my mixes for that, but when I played back the same mix on another stereo it was way too bassy.I found out that as I turned up the volume(I alawys had it on "11")the bass could'nt keep up=uneven response.
On my middle of the road kenwood w/pioneer speakers the sound is way hyped...loudness on=boomy, loudness off=drab.
Amazingly my favorite of the home systems is in my wifes Buick, concert sound is the label, darn good sound to my ears.

I think what we have to keep in mind is the 5% rule...
the public dictates what is an acceptable balance of value to quality,if you want to stray from that standard and get something 5% better it's probably gonna cost you 25%+ more.
The same rule applies to most if not all musical equipment,if it were'nt the case we'd all have zoom 505's.

This is coming from a guy who owns two Danelectro's.

But enough monitor debate,Germany wins....well they do have a history of trying to take on the world,if they try doing it one country at a time they may be more successful.

England loses, well it could be worse...I heard that France surrendered(it's in their blood ya'know)

DAMMIT if I told ya once I told ya a thousand times
I'm watching the kids not babysitting!

Chuck and Acid - I know you guys are trying to get to me with the Jets comments - but it ain't working. I hate the Jets, too (and the Mets as well). But don't either of you be talking 'bout my Yanks and Giants and Nets.

Paul - Sorry about England. US lost as well, but the difference is no one here really cares.

As for monitors - here's my story. My mates and I (notice the lingo Paul?) own 20/20 BAS's. For awhile they were located at my friend's house. We used to record there, do a rough mix, and then I would take the mixes home and work on them. My home system had just a decent pair of computer speakers. The mixes used to come out OK.

Then we moved everything to my house. I thought, OK now I'm going to mix on the 20/20's and the mixes are gonna rock your house.

First couple of mixes didn't sound any better than what I was doing on the computer speakers. So I thought, this stuff is all a bunch of BS.

Long story short (or is it too late for that). I continued to mix on the 20/20's. After a couple of months, and without actually realizing it, the mixes were becoming much, much better. It finally dawned on me that I was now able to take a mix and play on a variety of different systems, and it would sound pretty good on all of them.

My take on all this? You need to learn the speakers. But beyond that, I had "learned" my computer speakers, but never got to the point where my mixes could translate on a variety systems. But when I "learned" the 20/20's, the mixes started to translate much better. So I think you need both good speakers and to get familiar with them. I think you guys are looking for some magic to happen when you listen to good monitors. Well, the magic is there, it just isn't as obvious as you want it to be. It takes time. Spend some time with your speakers, get to know them, and then come back and let me know if you're still disappointed.

Sorry for the long dissertation.

I'm watching the kids not babysitting!
Glad to see you finally got that straight, acidman. :)

Dachay,
what was your take on that record setting sack by Strahan last year?
The people around here were mighty pissed at Favre and he's almost on the same level as Lombardi these days.

As far as the monitors, mixing has really opened my ears to the inconsistancies of speakers and headphones.I've got two sets of headphones, some cheapie Westinghouse and a NICE pair of Sony's and the gap between them is like the grand canyon.

It's kind of weird though,my wife and kids can talk right at me and I don't hear them, yet I'm picking up things like little delays and reverbs on songs.
I guess it's just a gift(the not hearing my family part that is)

Monitors - I read that most semi-pro and even pro people use Yamaha speakers , (I don't know what the model number is but the ones with the white cones that you see in most studio shots) somewhere in their set-up cos its kind of a recognised "standard "sound, its failings are well recognised and you can "learn" the sound envelope and compensate accordingly.

First mistake I made with my tiny computer speakers is that I have a sub-woofer and with that switched on, overall the sound is okay. But when I go play my mix on my Denon mini system with Monitor Audio speakers, the mix is all over the place. In my car (Audi) I have a Bose speaker system which is superb. The mix there sounds better but is still off some.

If I mix without the bass box, the mix is absolutely crap cos the computer speakers have no bass response, so whatever bass I put in the mix, I can't hear it - until I put the recording in my car or on my Denon. And of course, as you can guess, the bass is variable in quality and quantum.

So I very much take the point about learning the sound stamp of monitors, you just have to have speakers that at "Normal" volumes:) have a response accross a decent sound spectrum.

I use beyerdynamic DT 250 headphones which I chose because of the amount of acoustic work I do, they are maximised for the human voice and are excellent with acoustic instruments, less "wooly" sounding than the 100's. They are better for mixing than my computer speakers but for mastering, headphones are not ideal.

Mike, I appreciate using the lingo, making me feel more at home. You can all consider yourselves my "mates". Before I get WTF responses, in England, mates=buddies. "Mates" are also a brand of condoms used mainly by the gay fraternity. Have you got a condom brand in the US called "Buddies"? I think not. Whilst you might "mate" with your girlfriend/wife you wouldn't "buddy" with her would you? (The question is entirely rhetorical)

I can't talk about soccer, I am gutted, the whole country is depressed. Germany are lucky bastards, they might go all the way now and England beat them 5-1 earlier this year. As usual, world domination is their only motive. Italy losing is causing major upset in Italy, you just have to hear/read it to believe it. Front page news in all the Italian daily broadsheets complaining of cheating, underhand refereeing, set-ups and deals. Well, they should know;)

Chuck, BTW, in a one day cricket match this week a record score between Glamorgan and Surrey was recorded of 486 - 477 (or something very similar). Who said our games are boring cos the scores are low?:)

Acidrock, are you only watching the kids, is that the deal? No interaction at all? If so thats not bad. Cos with your headphones on you can do that from the comfort of your chair, not hear them and do music stuff at the same time :D You are truly gifted, no doubt at all. I salute you.

Paul, the Yamaha's you mentioned I think are the NS-10's. I thought I'd help you with that lest you get your knickers in a twist, old sod. Hey, I can do that British slang thing too. Yeah, I think that Glamorgan and Surrey match wiped the Clemens/Piazza thing right out of the top spot on Sportcenter. :D

The monitor stuff youse guys bring up gives me some pause. Of the 2 pair I auditioned at Guitar Center, I found the 20/20's to be clearer than the KRK's.

Mike, you sound like they work for you. They're probably worth another listen. I'd like to get a pair of 'gulp' Behringer Truths. Why? Cause they're cheap, they're powerful, and I can try them out locally. Can't do that with Yorkvilles for example (which I've heard raves about). I agree with the "Learn your speakers" comment. I spoke to a studio-owner friend and he said pretty much the same thing. Someone on this site said to mix with the monitors loud. I've gotten my best results that way with regards to how well the mix sounds in other sound systems.

Chuck, spot on old bean, jolly good show, top drawer stuff.:)

And now, in the real world.......:D

What are 20/20'S, who makes em? Looks like I have a couple of weeks yet to study the competition and choose.

Lots of fun for all the family.....well me anyway:)

Its like travelling. The fun is in the planning and studying the route as much as the arriving....

Acidrock, are you still child minding?
