    Computer setup....Help!!!

I would NOT automatically agree with selling the mixer and sound card. It all depends on what you want to ultimately DO with this system you are building. If you are intending at some point on doing live recording of yourself in a small band, the mixer will come in handy. If on the other hand...

    External HD recommendations?

My advice would be to not buy a pre-fab external hard drive. Instead buy an external case and then buy whatever drive you want. You might pay a bit more total, but you will end up with a more flexable tool. A surprising number of external hard drive systems that you buy now are sealed, and...

No it doesn't... I guess its just one of those techno oddities. :D

XP on iMac - Sluggish performance

I had not seen that particular "Audio tweeks for XP" list before, but it seems like a fairly solid list to me. Glad you got your Boot Camp issue figured out....

    computer upgrade

Everyone is going to have an opinion on this, but I say the bottom line on 32 bit vs 64 bit is whether or not your applications will NEED more than 4 gigs of RAM. Unless the answer is a definite YES, then stick with 32 bit. I don't know of any major applications that don't run with 64 bit...

    HDTV monitor question

"Tried changing the resolution and all that" is a bit vague, but a good starting point. As you probably know, flat screen monitors or TVs (unlike the older CRT monitors) only really look good at one particular resolution. A 1080p monitor is working at 1920 x 1080 resolution. A 720p monitor is...

I'm guessing that Tiger Direct would ship internationally. http://www.tigerdirect.com/

    which computer?

You have received some good advise. The only thing I would add to it is, if gaming is NOT going to be a BIG priority with the machine, look for a "silent" video card - one without a fan. I recently purchased a video card based on a Radeon 3670 chipset, the fastest I could find that requires...

    Mobo Question

You might want to check out this Motherboard + CPU deal for $139: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5024445&Sku=B69-3135 I'm thinking about buying it, not as a recording system but as a media server sitting next to my TV. Seems like it includes...

problems installing XP on HP Pavilion w/ Vista Ultimate

That's a common problem, since most cheap-ass companies these days try to save a few pennies by not including the media with the laptop. It also eliminates the chance of the home user trying to install the OS on a different computer. Some laptops have an option to create a set of "recovery"...

problems installing XP on HP Pavilion w/ Vista Ultimate

Noisewreck is right, although you can set up a duel boot, you are doing it in the wrong order. There is plenty of info on the web about how to do it. As for your XP crash problem: you already have the right idea. You need to go into the BIOS setting of your HP and change a setting under SATA...

    oh god please help

I'm glad you got it worked out. The problem sounded like software, although again I agree with nearly all of the tips in this thread. And I agree its worth it to have a power supply that's a bit beefier than what you think you will need - you never know when you might want to add another drive...

What are your preferences for backing up your music?

I have a large (1.5 T) second drive internally, and an identical hard drive set up externally that is a copy of the internal drive. I find this more flexible than a 2 drive internal RAID because if I want I can unplug the external drive and take it with me.

    oh god please help

Hey King! Sorry I did not see your thread earlier, I don't wander in here very much anymore. I've been a PC tech for a couple of decades now, and I've seen some weird crashes & bugs, so maybe I can help a bit. First, let me say that every idea I've seen put forward here is a good one and even...

1 Terabyte recording drive? too large?

The best way to back up a drive that big is to buy a second drive the same size, and use something like Ghost to copy the entire drive on a regular schedule.

    Noob PC Question

The only thing I would add is that if you are using an older motherboard with IDE (PATA) drives, try to keep your drives on separate controllers. You don't want to have reading & writing going on at the same time on the same controller. As for an external drive, if your hardware is new I would...

    Replacing xp service pack

Yes, SP3 can be removed. However SP contains everything that was in SP2, unless it is giving you some problems I would not see any need to remove it.

What is the best hard drive brand?

I've been working as a PC tech for more than 20 years, and a PC salesman before that. While I have seen particular models of hard drives that had a high failure rate (one infamous Maxtor 20 gig comes to mind), I have never been able to draw a conclusion that one brand is significantly more...

Would this be a good computer to buy for my home studio?

I agree, either build a PC yourself or have someone build one for you. And stay the hell away from Vista 64.
