    USB problems....

That is a weird one for sure. It was not uncommon for a year or two to find machines with both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 ports, but all recently built PCs should be USB 2.0 only. And I've never heard of one "regressing" as you describe. Unfortunately, all the solutions I can think of off the top of...

    Hardrive Mystery?

Sorry I have not replied earlier, I'm not in this forum as much as I used to be. What is interesting to me is that I work with Dell computers all the time, but I have never run across a Dell that was set up with a RAID right from the factory. Not that this isn't possible; in fact it sounds...

    MacBook Pro or PC?

ESATA is already replacing USB as the preferred method for connecting external hard drives. And it has the backing of pretty much everybody.

7200 RPM drives are easy to find, I would suggest checking again.

Progressive Metal recording project about to start, what do I need?

What you need to do to start off is to read some of the articles that are permanently posted at this site, which will answer many of the general questions you have. Then come back here with more specific questions.

    Optimising & upgrading PC...

Its rather strange that you would get that message from a year old PC. That message usually means you have plugged a USB2 device into a USB1 port. But every motherboard out there for the last few years (at least that I know of) has all USB2 ports.

    Computer to TV

Any computer output to an old NTSC screen (which is what it sounds like you are using) is going to look like crap and be limited to an 800 x 600 display. Which means you may have to change your monitor to display 800 x 600 too, and you will lose a lot of display area, thus defeating the whole...

    what burning software to use

Nero 9 Essentials should be just fine for doing any basic functions such as data, audio, and MP3 discs. I'm still using Nero 6 "lite" on my XP machine, it does almost everything.

    System Limitations

I don't use Cubase, but I would presume the answer to be Yes.

    System Limitations

I just wanted to point out that a dual-core processor really IS two CPUs, as a quad core ir 4 CPUs, and so on.

    Help with building a computer

Most people go about building a computer - whether for music or otherwise - the wrong way. The right way is to follow this course: Step 1, decide exactly what you want to do with it. Step 2, decide what software will let you do what you decided in step 1 Step 3, find out what hardware will best...

    Computer fans ruining recordings...

You can buy computer power supplies that are fanless - they have monster heat sinks on the back. And some motherboards have their video right on the motherboard, so there is no video card fan. That leaves only the CPU fan. You pretty much have to have a fan on any CPU newer than a Pentium...

Studio computer has been freezing! I'll lose business if I can't fix this!

You have received some good advise here, so I wont repeat that part. I'm not familar with your Abletron device, but I'm familar with XP. I strongly suggest that you re-enable the Windows swap file. I do agree in setting as a fixed size - set "Initial Size" and "Max size" as the same number...

    New HDD not detected

Yes you can. How old is this PC you are putting it in? Some old motherboards with early SATA connectors only support the older 1.5 SATA transfer rate. For those boards, you need to set a jumper on the hard drive. Otherwise wacky stuff like what you describe can happen. On the other hand, if...

    FYI for Windows users

That's a perfectly valid strategy, which is why I said "IF your PC is attached to the internet" etc. If everything in your studio is working fine, and you have no exposure to the outside world, you are fine. I still recommend updating every time a service pack comes out though. But some of...

    FYI for Windows users

Just an FYI, if your system is attached to the Internet. Microsoft released a bunch of security patches for XP / Vista / Win 7 in the last 48 hours. If you have not run Windows Update in awhile, now might be a good time to do so.

    "Antimalware Doctor" Virus

My favorite two anti-virus tools at this moment in time, both free: Combofix - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/combofix No need to install it. Just download from that link to a USB flash drive. Then shut off the effected computer, turn it back on and boot into Safe mode...

Installing windows 7, have 2x1tb drives - Need help!!

I think 99% of the users on this forum would be better off just using one drive internally, and setting up the second drive externally in a USB or ESATA case. Then use a program like Ghost and write a backup of the internal drive to the external drive every month or so. Just my opinion...

    Windows XP service pack?

Nice studio photo btw. I agree with the others above, with one additional caution. As of this month (August 2010) SP3 is required in order to download any new updates from Microsoft update. Like SP3 itself, most of these updates involve security issues. However some of them also involve...
