HELP.....External drive error says "drive needs to be formatted"

That is probably what is known as "the click of death". If you open up a hard drive, it has a number of smooth round metal platters that spin at a very high speed. There is a small mechanical arm connected to a read-write head that looks similar to an arm on an old style turn table. Sometimes...

HELP.....External drive error says "drive needs to be formatted"

Running Autoplay is normal and stopping that should not cause any problems. Apparently just a flaky drive, or it got bumped too much on the way home, or something.

    best cheap usb audio interface?

I recently picked up this model Presonus: PreSonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System | Musician's Friend I am currently using it with 2 Shure SM-57 mics and it sounds great. Unfortunately I was looking for an interface which would also plug into a mixer, i.e would work at line level, and...

Should I get a 2 ch or 8 ch interface???????

Go with the 8. For the small difference in price you will get a much more flexible device.

HELP.....External drive error says "drive needs to be formatted"

Here is the key bit of information in your post: "Then after recording a live event, I get home". Did you plug it into some sort of proprietary recording hardware? Or just a standard PC? And if the later, what operating system? Could that device have formatted the drive with its own system...

Synth and soundcard/interface don't like each other.

Typhoid is right on - usually "distorted and crackly" means too hot a signal, check to make sure everything is plugged in correctly to your interfaces line-level inputs. And make sure your interface DOES have real line level inputs: I recently bought a Presonus interface that supposedly did...

Is FireWire the way to go?

Short answer: Firewire has had some advantages over USB in the past in terms of sustained transfer rates. But USB has dominated Firewire in the marketplace, and Firewire is disappearing from PCs and laptops. That doesn't mean that a Firewire interface wont work well for you, I'm just saying...

    Solid State Drives

There are numerous PCs from companies like Dell and HP that have room for only one internal hard drive, plus a power supply that can barely handle one drive. So its not that uncommon.

    Solid State Drives

As many others have pointed out, you can use a much smaller SSD drive for the OS and spend far less than $1000. I always recommend PC owners have 2 drives anyway, a small fast drive for the OS and programs and a 2nd big drive for data, and for backing up the OS drive too. I'm not using any...

    HACKINTOSH... What's The Problem?

100 Agree, although I DO own a Mac - but it was given to me for free so that's a bit different. I do have a tech friend who successfully built a Hackintosh just to see if he could do it, so yes its possible. I think he ended up not really using it and switching it back to Windows 7.

    Recording cassette to pc

But its also useful to be able to remove the drive from the external case for a number of reasons, the most obvious is being able to replace it with a larger capacity drive in the future. Plus most external cases that you buy (although not all, you need to check) can accept either IDE or SATA...

    Recording cassette to pc

It all comes down to how you treat them. External hard drives are exactly the same hardware as internal drives, but in an external box. For years now all hard drives have auto-parked their heads once they are powered down. Regardless of whether a drive is inside a PC or in an external case...

Will I need an external hard drive?

You should always have an external drive for backups if nothing else. Drives are cheap these days.

Anyone here own a Presonus Audiobox USB?

Thanks for the suggestion, that does indeed look like it would work. But I hate to throw another $120 at the problem, I don't want to get stuck again if it doesn't work. I'll have to check and see if I can return it first. If I had not been a dumbass and had done more research I might have...

Anyone here own a Presonus Audiobox USB?

I've been using it with two Shure SM-57 mics, that don't require Phantom power. It works fine. Phantom power is a seperate switch that can be turned on or off. My original post could have been worded better. The manual for the Presonus flatly says it is not for use with Line Level devices...

Anyone here own a Presonus Audiobox USB?

No surprise, Guitar Center wont take the unit back, as it is a "non-returnable item". Bummer.... works great with mics for sure, but that's it. Not the unit I was led to believe. Any recommendations on a USB 2.0 interface that does BOTH 2 mics or 2 line inputs?

    drive configurations

First let me say that I pretty much 100% agree with everything Somegezzer said. But you might want to consider another configuration - Put your second WD drive in an external case and connect via USB or ESATA. Use your internal WD drive for data, and back all data up to the external. Don't...

Reliable computer tech support website for basic non-music-making questions?

That is exactly right. I do it all the time in my job. Another option: for about $15 you can buy an external USB interface that allows you to hook up any internal IDE or SATA drive to a computer via a USB 2 cable. I also use those all the time, and they work fine too.
