a thought about not being satisfied

I totally agree. I tell my writing students the same thing; if you write often, you'll have numerous duds, but you can't get to the good stuff without first getting the duds out of the way. I use a sports analogy -- Jordan (insert other great athlete here) missed many, many shots and played...

    Looking Forward, Moving Back [Lyrics]

I like some of the imagery -- could be rather powerful sung. It's hard to get a hold on who 'we' are, though. Maybe throw us more hints? G

    How's This?

At 1 AM, this sounds good. It's moody and has some very good guitar solos. The lyrics and singing don't shine, though. They almost feel like afterthoughts -- something to fill in between solos. The melody is especially plodding. This could definitely use some drum fills or tempo changes. 6...

Garry - It's funny -- a friend wrote the lyrics 10 years ago and has since forgotten he wrote them. Go figure. Thanks for the comments, though. I'll pass them along. I agree there's too much bass -- I've already fixed that. I'm happy to hear your comments about the atmosphere. The...

    limitations on my mr8 frustrating

I agree. They're pretty awful. I am doing just as groucho describes, and it works the best for me (I, too, was holding onto the hope that, miraculously, the Fostex effects would be good...oh, well). G

Conducting some research on the sometimes childish attacks here--any thoughts?

Because they can, without face-to-face repurcussions. People seem to jump at the opportunity to be anonymously mean. It is inappropriate, but it is also exhilirating. There's a certain adrenaline rush that goes along with being mean. Maybe. I can imagine a few people being wiseasses in...

I posted this over at the MP3 clinic, but got few responses. I hate bumping myself up, so I am re-posting it here. Indirect, but effective? I'm curious as to your thoughts on the following: 1. Lyrics 2. Vocal performance 3. Chord progression / melody 4. Tempo -- too slow...

I'm proud at this, what do you guys think of it?

Nice melody! The mix -- bring up the vocals and add a bit of reverb to bring the song to life. It sounds like you're in a closet -- a good place to record, but then you want to add "presence"... Good tune, though... I enjoyed it. I like the lyrics, too. G

    How many people...

Wow -- from the looks of the poll, there are a lot of lonely musicians out there. But isn't it great to be in complete control? Hehe...

    limitations on my mr8 frustrating

robjh22 -- As an English teacher, I am annoyed with the grammatical errors in the VF80 manual, but the directions are clear overall. I understand there's a learning curve, however. nTrack is low-key. You and I have heard of it, but you don't see it advertised in gear catalogs -- they keep...

New Song for Evaluation - Rock

I, too, like the SP thing going on. It doesn't seem to follow through enough in the rest of the song, which is almost too quiet, and slow, like others have noted. I like the lyrics, but the vocals crack during the chorus -- the backing vox is especially weird -- too loud? out of tune? Sounds...

With a little help from your friends...

I like your voice. It reminds me a bit of Harry Chapin. There's a nice melody here, too. I didn't notice any clipping. Have you considering adding other instruments? It might help fill this out. Just a thought. Nice recording! G

    "Creepin' "-Please Give A Listen

Very nice...other than the hiss, it sounds great. The lead gets a bit messy around 1:50, but the overall playing is superb. You certainly know your way around the fretboard. As I listen, the hi-hats are also bugging me. A victim of hair dryer, too? Groove on, G

"Ambient Drum n Bass" -- new tracks

Checked out Potheazzz -- not my type of music, but a cool beat and interesting sampling. As one who has never smoked pot (cough, cough :D ), I can't relate to the sound bites, but I dug listening to this. G

    No More

Hey, thanks a lot for the feedback. I really appreciate it. I had concerns about all the things you mentioned...the bass maybe being loud, the strings being cheesy (they're from a low-end Yamaha keyboard). As for the guitar lead, I had been doing way too much with it, and on my brother's...

    No More

Hey all -- Something new I'm working on. You'll notice by the cultural reference after the first chorus that the lyrics are old -- my friend wrote them about 10 years ago, and I'm just now getting around to recording them. Jeesh, nice friend, huh? :D Anyway, I'm looking for your thoughts...

    OPINIONS WANTED!...prefearbly honest ones.

Lyrics: Catchy Guitar: Good rythm, but sounds weak/thin Voice: Also thin, and out of tune. Suggestion: Try the vocals belted out instead of whispered. It sounds as if you are singing lightly so as not to disturb someone in the next room. That tentativeness is distracting. Shout it out...

    New music...

Nice stuff. I like his voice. It would be great to be able to listen to an entire song, though. I feel like I'm at Amazon.com! If bandwidth is a problem, remove some of the clips and replace w/1-2 whole mp3s. Just a thought. I'd definitely want to hear more. G

Beautiful Girl Sings! Please Critique the Recording.

She does have a nice voice, but I agree w/others - too much reverb and the song doesn't do her voice justice. I'd be curious to hear her open up w/something more upbeat -- a rocker or a jazzy tune. Thanks for the listen. G
