I am finding that about one in four tubes that I buy are quite noisy in my mics. Spits, sparks, bumps, rumbles and such. They usually come with all sorts of test results showing that they are in great shape. Are such tubes still good for amps and preamps or am I just being ripped off?

Much better mix. Still a bit muddy with the vocals but maybe that's what you're aiming for.

You really need an interface to record properly on the PC or Mac. Go here Tweak's Guide to the Home and Project Studio for some really good advice. It's a very good read.

Not a problem. It's all entirely subjective though and that's the point I'm trying to make. You or someone else could contradict everything I just wrote about those two Shure microphones and both of us would still be right.

I have a Presonus Inspire - Firewire up on E-Bay right now. Doesn't take up much room. So many to choose from and no need to sacrifice quality.

Overall, the sound is the early days of Pop. Mamas & Papas, Hollies, that sort of thing. The vocals are sweet but are entirely hidden by the acoustic guitar. Nice beat too but it kind of takes over in places. Very often, when someone mixes like this, it's to disguise hiss, bad notes, etc. or...
