The AKG Perception mics are in your price range and unlike most budget mics, they do not emphasize the highs but are a little heavy on the mid range. Decent mics and not something you will be in a hurry to ditch after you upgrade.

I can vouch for Kustom PA's if any of you are interested. Compact, easy to store and will do any small room or restaurant. Gets a little muddy if you try to crowd it but for guitar and vocals, it rocks. Also works as a marvelous monitor system.

Wish you could remember the name of the AKG mic. It would be a shame to dismiss the brand based on a mic that you don't remember. There are several different flavours. High quality too. Like EV though, it can be an acquired taste.

Anyone into mixing 5:1 surround? I just got three Yorkvilles (YSM 1P II) and already own a pair of Behringer truths and an Echo Mona which has 6 outs. Just wondering if it's worth remixing my last project and whether I would need a sub woofer or just any 8" woofer for bass.

There are plenty of decent tube mics on E-Bay, starting at around $200 and from what I've seen, they are all pretty good.
