Avoiding frequency overlap = perfect mix?

Ok, just seeking advice from those more experienced than I, and who know about thsi stuff. We probably all seen various frequency charts which show the given frequency range for each instrument (drums, bass, keys, guitars etc.) Well, when it comes to mixing / EQ'ing, many people have mentioned...

    SM58 Beta on hi-hats?

thanks. Great advice. I adn't thought about matching the drum sample sound with the overdubs. Will experiment, as you say. Might even post up a link when done, see what ya'll think!

    SM58 Beta on hi-hats?

Rami, in response to your very negative post, I haven't 'just tried it' because I'm at work when I post on this forum (Lucky me!). And my drum kit is not set up permanently so I can't 'just try it' without a lot of set-up / take-down hassle. Hence, why I came to ask fellow forum'ers for their...

    Pre-amp advice please

I record electro-acoustic guitar direct to the Tascam DP02 (which i then transfer to DAW as WAVs via USB). The recorings aren't bad, but I was looking at getting a pre because I had read that the sound quality / signal level could be significanlt improved by using a decent preamp. IS this...

    Pre-amp advice please

Ok. Here's a really basic question... if my signal is loud enough by going direct from, say, my electro-acoustic guitar into the digital multi-track, is that the PUREST signal i can get, or will a pre-amp change / boost / enhance the signal AND TONE of the guitar? I always aim to keep the...

    SM58 Beta on hi-hats?

So you think the Rode NT2 is better than the SM57 or 58 for the hi-hats? Just DI'd (with phantom) to multi-track? Worth using the SM58B too? Any advice on mic positioning?

    SM58 Beta on hi-hats?

Hi folks, I need to add (overdub) some 'real' hi-hats to a drum track I made recently (via midi) because the midi hi-hats sound unrealistic / plain crap. I already own the hi-hat cymbals & stand etc., so I'm wanting to overdub the hats using a Shure SM58 Beta to record them. (I'll then...

    Pre-amp advice please

Thanks so far... anyone tried the Tube MP Studio V3? http://www.dv247.com/studio-equipment/art-tube-mp-studio-v3-microphone-instrument-preamp--61010 Most of what's been suggested so far had been way out of my price range.

    Pre-amp advice please

I'm not using anything for acoustic and vocals (yet). My budget = cheap as possible (so long as it works). Just need a single channel.

    Pre-amp advice please

Hi guys, I've been thinking of getting a pre-amp for a while now - mainly for to boost the quality and level of my signals (for my acoustic gtr, and maybe vocals. I don't really want to spend a huge wedge, so just wondered if you folks thought a pre-amp would be a good idea, and if so, what...

Amps & speakers - your vote

The Behringer A500 amp sounds like a really good bit of kit. Probably has too much power for my project studio, but I guess there's nothing wrong with turning it down! A very good tip I picked up recently (probably from Southside G, or Massive) was to mix at fairly low volumes. I've tried...

    multiple monitor set-up

the producer was saying he has them both running in tandem. But didn't say why. Plugging a gap in the frequencies? Purposefully exaggerating certain freq's that perhaps the KRK's (looked like RP8's) weren't representing faithfully enough? Is there any other reason / benefit to it?

Amps & speakers - your vote

So guys, 3 fun Q's about studio reference amps and passive speakers: 1) What you got & how much it co$t ya? 2) What amp and speakers are you looking to get next (or are you happy with your set-up)? 3) What do you consider the 'best' reference amp & passive speakers for studio monitoring?

    multiple monitor set-up

Hi again guys, I was reading an article about a set-up where a producer had 2 sets of monitors in use at one time for stereo mixing (not for surround sound). Is that kind of set-up a good idea? As well as nearfield's, there was also a set of small speakers on the desk - they looked like...

    Yamaha NS10's - what's the dealio?

Hi, there seems to be fair bit of contention over whether the NS10's are actually any good for mixing. There doesn't seem to be a structured thread about them, though. Lots of folks seem to have used them (or still do), but on the flip side of that coin there are those who simply can not stand...

    guitar multi-FX - what's best out there

Hi folks, anyone recommend a decent multi-FX unit for cheap (under £200 would be ideal)? What I'm looking for is a floor FX unit for live use (and maybe recording if it sounds decent enough) - the features I need are very simple really: 1) decent overdrive (for blues type stuff) 2) a nice...

    Limiter advice

Thanks G. I've never visited that website, so thanks for the heads-up. I'll have a snoop around on there. Seems like a little gem for free VSTs etc. Yes, the Limiter in my DAW is just 1 dial and when you crank it, surprisingly, it doesn't sound half bad. When it's 'maxed' there is...

    Limiter advice

Hi folks, I've found in the Mastering Section of my DAW (Magix Music Studio Deluxe 12) that there is a 'Limiter', but there is just a 'dial' that applies it. There are no application values. Can someone advise me on how to use a Limiter please, as it seems the more I apply, the louder the...

    Best way to master?

Thanks for all your ongoing feedback / thoughts. Just out of interest, how much would I be looking at for a pro to master my 12 track (alt-rock) album?
