Do you have an oscilloscope? I'd start by checking the signal to the erase head, make sure all channels were the same. That would tell you if the problem was with the head or electronics. You could probably use a multimeter, but a 'scope would give you more info.

Sounds like you're having issues with several decks. If you're anywhere near Nashville, I could take a look at them for you.

Heads/tape path clean? All switches/controls set properly? Is the tape threaded properly? Are all of the guides/lifters functioning properly? Has anything changed since the last time it worked?
