    Need new turntable: opinions?

Yeah, a lot of the B&O turntable used Ortofon cartridges. Great sounding, but like has been mentioned, a bit pricey. The Technics SL-1200, also previously mentioned, has been a workhorse for decades. Last time I checked, parts were still readily available for them. If you can find a decent one...

    Recording a choir?

I ended up using a pair of LDC mics (MXL992) ORTF and a Rode NTK for the soloists, with a pair of MXL 603S on the piano. Only one problem - my student assistant decided to turn the wireless on to surf the web while we were waiting for the choir to get ready, and left it on. That causes (and...

    Which mixing desk?

The older Alesis Studio 32 is a fairly underrated unit. It's not great, but does a good job for a very modest price.

record & erase problem on tascam 424 mkII

Not at all. You definitely need a high-Z probe though, or you can load the signal down and get false readings. Just scope both sides of all the channels on the erase head with the machine set to record. If they're all (roughly) the same, then the head's the culprit. If not, just trace back until...

mics on guitar amps... condenser or dynamic?

Have you played with mic placement much with the condenser? Closer to the edge of the speaker than the center an/or putting it off axis in relation to the speaker by varying amounts? There's one guy I record fairly often that plays a Tele with a tone that turns into an instant icepick through...

record & erase problem on tascam 424 mkII

Do you have an oscilloscope? I'd start by checking the signal to the erase head, make sure all channels were the same. That would tell you if the problem was with the head or electronics. You could probably use a multimeter, but a 'scope would give you more info.

Has Guitar Center Marts dropped the value of guitars?

The price of some instruments is way out of line with their actual value to a player. Folks at Gibson will flat tell you that the current top of the line Gibsons aren't priced or made for players, but as "trophies" for the well to do. And honestly, some of the Epiphones are every bit as good as...

    Microphone Trends

This. Absolutely. It takes less practice to make a great mic sound good than to make a good mic sound great.

Unless you're going to recalibrate the deck, use the tape it's set up for.

Sounds like you're having issues with several decks. If you're anywhere near Nashville, I could take a look at them for you.

Tascam 35-2 plays but meters don"t respond

Heads/tape path clean? All switches/controls set properly? Is the tape threaded properly? Are all of the guides/lifters functioning properly? Has anything changed since the last time it worked?

    Sympathy For the Devil.

Good overall balance, everything is exceptionally clear and detailed. The vocal performance is really nice. Drums and percussion really clean, maybe a little too much so. The cymbal in the guitar solo sounds like it's out there all by itself. My only real criticism is the bass in the...

Behringer ADA8000 as a mic preamp?

Well, you'd want to be able to switch the direct connection on and off, I'd think. Probably more trouble and expense than it's worth.

Behringer ADA8000 as a mic preamp?

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the way people in the community here share their knowledge and experience. kinofpain - I understand what you're saying. The idea was to occasionally use the ADA8000 just for preamps in case I ran out of mic inputs at a live recording session. That would have...
