To release a CD or not? Read before voting please!

I'll say yes, but it has to be worth it! If I'm buying a CD, I'll want quality, so I'd expect a professional run. It shows that the band is serious about what they're doing. I guess my band is lucky. Our first album was created the do it yourself way. Not being in the band at the time (but on...

4 track recordering for my grandma's birthday

Versatile mic of choice would be either the Shure SM57 or SM58. 57 being your all around mic and the 58 being slightly more geared for vocals. Take off the ball of the 58 though, and you get a 57, basically.

    Woah......

Sounds right. During band rehearsal, our lead guitarist sometimes gets electrocuted minorly from his vocal mic. We think it's a grounding problem.

What are addlibs? I know what ad libs are but that has nothing to do with recording...

    Stage Monitor/Speaker?

Hi all, I recently got a keyboard amp, and I'm unsure how it's going to sound on stage (I will find out!). I'm thinking that I might want something closer to my ear though. The amp has several outputs, including an addition amplified output. Can anyone suggest a smallish speaker I can use if...

    portable recorder/outdoor recordings

Other than a laptop, the two major options would be: M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96 (May be priced lower than M-Audio suggests) http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MicroTrack2496-main.html or one of the new style Sony MiniDisc recorders that records full quality and supports USB transfer. Sorry, no...

    upfront vocals

I'd be very interested to know the mic used, mic placement, and what the room is like. I've found that these 3 items are the most important parts of getting the vocal sound you want.

    Group Buy Interest?

Whoa! How did I miss out on this? I'd be interested in leftovers or another order. :)

    Keyboard/Drum Machine help

I would hope that your computer has MIDI capabilites, and that you can run a MIDI cable out of the keyboard, and into the computer.

    Cables

I've had nothing but good results with my Hosa 1/4" to RCA snake with my 1010LT.

    Recording keyboards direct

I think it really depends what kind of patch you're recording. I would probably go direct for pianos, but amped for Rhodes. I'm on the fence for electronic noises!

    Logic Express vs. Soundtrack Pro?

Yeah, I'm not really sure how much Soundtrack differs from Logic--I always assume it was geared more towards video than music engineering, though it looks like it certainly could be.

    Studio Monitors by M-Audio?

I decided to start with the DX4s. They seem good for me so far--both the price and the way they fit into my setup, as well as the sound!

    Mixing approach

And yet, not everyone requires this. It really depends how well prepared everyone is going into the project. For example, my band (before I was a member) recorded our first CD in two 8-9 hour sessions. There are only 8 tracks and the album turned out to be 26 minutes long, but it was a...

    Get your wood cone monitors...

From what I'd read on the site, they're just very thin sheets of wook soaked in saki, shaped, and then cut. I assume they'll just sound like paper cones.

    I need Help with S/PDIF on a Delta 1010LT .

Good question! I'm sure I've asked this a couple times, but I don't remember if I ever got a cost effective answer! Some preamps have SPDIF outs. It's the higher end ones that do. If you do find something to use, yes, all 10 inputs should record simultaneously, but you will need to setup the...

Roland RH-200 or Sony MDR-V700 monitor headphones

I think a lot of people don't realize how loud monitors have to be--not loud at all if my reading has been right. I don't know of any headphones that would be good enough. I broke down and got a pair of M-Audio DX4 monitors and they've helped my mixing.
