How to record a full band?

For our sessions, we do drums with scratch guitar/vocals.

    DI Boxes?

I've done it with guitar and bass before with mixed results. I just didn't know if it was a standard thing or not. The guitars sounded a bit gritty and "clean". Bass seemed all right though the last time I tried that amp I was getting a ton of hiss from it.

    DI Boxes?

:/ Our lead singer died in that fire. I'm not offended, I'm just conveying how real it all is. Slightly more on topic--For recording instruments DI, is taking a line out from an amp acceptable? I'm thinking about micing the amps, while taking a line from the amps to the mixer and from there...

taking the vocals from a mix?

Guys, read the question. He wants to use the vocals in another mix, not remove them from an existing one.

    Choral/Orchestral/Classical recording

Could you better describe the recording you've got? I did some choral stuff recently. I was not able to get levels for each group in advance so I did not know how loud things were going to get, so I left a good amount of room to prevent clipping. In the post-recording phase (it was hardly...

Removing the grill cloth on my amp

Resonating or not, if he was miking any of those cabinets, he should have no trouble finding the cone. I can see them just fine.

    Some advice on a speaker

Keyboard amps DO NOT come cheap, especially good ones. I suppose Roland is the king of keyboard amp manufacturers, though I have an old Crate amp that was made by some other company.

Removing the grill cloth on my amp

When miking a speaker, I like to just listen for the sweet spot. You can't nail it just by looking. Many engineers will tell you that you shouldn't be pointing it directly at the cone anyways, but on an angle.

    Why can't I burn a 242mb wav file to a cd?

I'm still trying to figure out of the person was simply trying to burn a data disc. He did not specify which.

Ive realised like most of you guys!

Many people would probably contest Waves. I don't have any outside plugs than what Logic comes with, and at that, while they're nice, I hardly know how to use them, and using presets just does not cut it sometimes.

    Cleaning Old Audio???

It is impossible to edit individual instruments within a mixdown. Some mastering engineers may be able to perceptually adjust levels, but there isn't all that much you can do. And please, digitize to and work in a non lossy format like WAV or AIF. It'll be easier to remove the hiss and will...

    Recording Overseas

Quite right, though I did think of a way to eliminate one problem. I can borrow a Tascam US-122 and use that instead of my mixer. It's USB powered and eliminates one problem. Apple PowerBooks are rated for 220, I just need an adapter.

    Recording Overseas

I'm not sure I'll be able to make those kinds of arrangements, besides the fact that we'll be in different parts of Italy each day.

    Recording Overseas

Hello all, In May, I will be traveling to Italy with my college chamber singers for a tour. As well as singing in the group, I've been given the job of recording the concerts. I have a portable setup that consists of my laptop, mixer, mics, and stands, but I'm not sure it's portable enough to...

i dont know about you guys...

I agree totally. Use what sounds best! Not necessarily what you're SUPPOSED to use. Just like I think XY placement is overrated. :P

Questions about Solo Piano recording w/ Keyboards

A real piano is always best! However, I would look into getting a finely sampled piano disc for control by MIDI. Just look at sampler piano packages (NI makes one that's pretty good). Personally, I use a Kurzweil PC2R (I recently upgraded from the Kurzweil ME1 module), and it sounds good for...

    dream theater's tracking process?

I actually got to ask him about this. He used to be a huge Kurzweil player, as well as a former employee of Kurzweil, but he told me that he recently switched to Korg because of the difficult period Kurzweil was going through. He was afraid his keyboards would break down and he would be unable...

    Who's working with video?

OMF is actually more of an audio format, as I see it. Can be used to interchange multitrack audio between different audio editing programs and video programs.

    Who's working with video?

Oh how I know. ;) But while I have you here... is it possible to record MiniDV cameras (consumer grade, anyways) on some kind of sync? Yes, it is fairly easy to line up, but with FCP 5's new multi-angle mode, the angles need to be on the same timecode or it just doesn't work. I don't know of...

How should I record a classical singer with piano?

If this is a recital performance, use a pair of room mics setup somewhere they would appear natural. As a diverse performer myself (classically trained, yet sometimes a rock musician), I can tell you that it would be awful distracting, improper and outright rude to have a whole bunch of gear and...
