    Interesting wire recorder

When I was a kid, my dad had one. From my memories, the reproduction wasn't bad, but then I was a kid. I understand that these things run at very high speeds, and the power needed to print onto them required tubes. I do know that the wire my dad's ran made very poor guitar strings, though.

    M-Audio Tampa Fluff or Fact?

Anytime you read copypasta about how tubes change the sound of an instrument or microphone, consider this: If these folks really knew exactly what a tube does and how it works it's little magical tricks, you would see them making solid state gadgets that sound exactly like tubes do. They don't...

Half done song, hows it going?

I like the Neil Young vibe here. The drums are recorded nicely, not huge, but not washed out in reverb, either. Guitar tone comes across clearly and no swings in volume. Might be a timing issue or two, nothing outrageous at all. Good stuff, IMO.

    Cheese, please...

This is an experiment, mixing down from analog into the box. Drum machine is crap, vocals need a retake, but opinions welcome... http://media.putfile.com/excoriate

Contact RMGI Before It's Too Late

I completely agree that it is vital to the continuation of tape to make it more attractive to small home recordists. This is why pricing is crucial. There are very few new machines available, and those are prohibitively expensive. Should the actual media also become either difficult to obtain or...

    Distortion Pedals

As far as adjustable EQ, the Quadrafuzz is the ultimate. It runs your signal through four filters, then allows you to add distortion to each one seperately. You can even run all four outputs into a mixer and combine them any way you like. The distortion is LED clipping, similar to a Rockman. Two...

    Nuts

I don't mean to come across as defensive, maybe I'm a little edgy sounding via type due to some nonsense I'm dealing with currently not involving any sort of tape or fretted instrument. I admit the overuse of the phrase,"explosion in a cesspool," as I like the imagery. Cutting a new nut is...

    Nuts

Well, I didn't mean to set off an explosion in a cesspool. No, 1/16th of an inch is not proper resolution to get it right, that's why I work from that point downward. You are free to spend your time any way you like, I like to spend mine making my instrument work the way I want it to instead of...

    Nuts

I have a method, doped out because of cheap guitars always having plastic nuts. On a Fender or copy thereof, this usually results in fine work, but Gibsons are a whole other ballgame. I cut a carpenter's pencil in half on a bandsaw, place the bone blank into the slot, and put a doubled up...

Contact RMGI Before It's Too Late

I see an unpleasant trend here. I buy tape, yes, though no more than perhaps $1000 a year. Still, that means that if there are 100 people like me, there's a hundred grand worth of sales from small users. I guarantee that there are more people using 1/4" tape than 2", and if this is by a factor...

This page is my personal bible for demag issues...if anyone sees bad info on here, please let me know! Oscilloscopes and wave generators I find to be an invaluable tool for getting good quality out of my tape machines. http://home.flash.net/~mrltapes/mcknight_demag.pdf

    I Suck.

"You must spread some reputation around before giving it to Supercreep again." Nevertheless, you are dead-on right. One of the reasons I like home recording is that I can have 300 takes and wind up improving my skills with each fawkup. It is discouraging, disappointing, and the only thing that...

    My Townes Van Zandt cover...

Great choice of material. The ending is very moving, despite the out of synch guitars, and the vocal performance is outstanding. It takes courage to cover TVZ, it would be good to hear this redone, but I wouldn't touch the vox at all.

Contact RMGI Before It's Too Late

I could see a fine advertisement for tape, if RMGI ever decided to expand their customer base. Just give someone a DAW setup in windows with not...quite...enough memory, and film them cursing the thing wildly. Make sure the hard disk is on it's last legs, so that as soon as they are close to...

    Marshall JCM 2000 problems/questions

Jesus! Have you listened to the sound samples of that thing? They aren't kidding when they say it sounds like an exploding amplifier. It's absolutely horrible, makes me want one.

I believe you are right. I don't use that amp, so I can't give you a definitive answer, though.

    Upgrading pro tools question.

You needn't worry about erasing your hardware, it will exist no matter what sort of uninstall you do. To be sure of keeping your projects intact, I suggest backing them up to a removable media before uninstalling your pro-tools. Make sure to save the actual wav files, as well as the pts files...

    ohm's?

Yes, they do need to match at least closely. Ohms are a measurement of impedance, and while it can get tricky when you deal with changing loads, in practice it's pretty simple, just plug 4 ohm outputs into 4 ohm cabinets, and 8 ohm outs into 8 ohm cabs. For better information, google, "Ohm's...

    Questions about building guitar...

This is perfectly viable, in fact, back in the early 70s there were quite a few Les Paul copies that had this feature, most under the Univox name. Best place to put the circuit board is in the routing for the pots, if you have room. This allows you to put your controls right next to the volume...
