What kind of peripheral equipment will I need to use Reaktor or Gigasampler in a dedicated computer. In other words, I'm presuming that the second computer will need both a midi interface and an audio soundcard. Will I need any additional ethernet cards/software? Any other suggestions? Thanx.
I'm contemplating getting into the world of sample CDs...But have become perplexed and disoriented. There seems to be some differentiation between and "audio" track and a .wav track. I had thought that audio and .wav were one and the same. Similarly, I have read that there are "audio" CDs and...
I appreciate the replies. A while back I went through all sorts of computer woes with the upshot being that -despite my attempts- to back-up my work, there is one piece which may only be found in .mp3 form. That's why I was wondering if there was anything that can be done that would even...
Kind of a technical question. If I have converted a .wav to .mp3 format and then back again what kind of sonic degradation occurs? Similarly, if one "zips" a .wav and then unzips it, what kind of degradation occurs? As a follow up...is there any kind of process (i.e. eq, harmonic exciters)...
I'm trying to wade through the wide world of processing and don't quite the difference between a compressor and a limiter? When does one use one and not the other? Do most songs/tracks utilize both? Hell, for that matter, which species does the Ultramaximizer? Thanx.
Thanx for your reply, Emeric...very helpful. What do I want? Good question. I'm currently working with Cakewalk ProAud 9. Almost all of my stuff is MIDI and audio samples. I have no plans - at this time - for recording bands. Rather, I want to be able to work with multi-tracks of audio...
Not to belabor the point but in looking at a recent Electronic Musician article the haze of confusion began to gather again. The article states that Wavelab 3.0 actually has serious multi-track capabilities via the "audio montage" window. If this is true, is it still apples/oranges with Vegas...
Hmmm...I thought I knew stuff but I guess I don't...must be why I chose the Newbie forum. I'm still not quite getting it...You can record into both programs; apply effects and processing in both programs. I guess I see the overlap but not the apples and oranges stuff quite yet.
Maybe I'm not...
I am thinking of putting a lecture series on to CD (from tape). Is the amount of audio material that can fit on a CD dependent upon the sampling rate and/or stereo/mono choices or can one only put 74 minutes of audio on a CD?
In other words, if I record a .wav in mono and at a low sampling...
Is the general consensus that Logic "takes" over Cakewalk? Is Logic knowledge intensive or fairly intuitive? I realize I'm beginning to stray from the original topic...I've been CakeWalk so long that maybe its time to think of something new.
I very much appreciate the responses. This is extremely helpful...particularly for someone who has had ABSOLUTELY no experience in these mystic realms beforehand.
Yeah...Just getting my landlegs so its hard for me to know all the proper lingo...
Let's say I've recorded a .wav; and want to play with changing the levels of (oh, let's say) delay or reverb to portions of the .wav. Like bringing higher degrees of echo or tap to certain phrases in the .wav.
I...
Thanks so much for your suggestion. A little more about the tape...it was made by directly feeding the synths (via sequencer) into the amp and tape deck. There was no compression/limitation/eq etc. and I noticed that the sound on the tape was MUCH different than the original mix. I realize...
When would one use a parametric EQ rather than a graphic EQ or vice verse? What dictates whether EQ comes before compression on a track or -for that matter- a final mix? Thanx.
I appreciate yr reply. What I'm trying to figure out is...how to apply the non-destructive edits to the mix-down. I guess more clearly stated is are there any programs which allow you to automate the effects editing and then apply the new automated settings to the mix?
I am interested in applying effects on the fly in real-time - to certain portions of a piece before the final mix-down. I currently have Cakewalk ProAud which -I think- will only allow this kind of process in destructive editing mode. Are there any programs -Wavelab, Vegas, etc. that will...
